Students Place First at Annual Nutrition Bowl

Graduate student Andrea Crittenden, graduate student Carina Chiodo and dietetic intern Crystal Vasquez represented CSU, Chico in the competitive quiz game.
“We’re proud of our students’ performance in this fun experience, where they were challenged with the opportunity to test their knowledge of the dietetics field,” said Kathryn Silliman, chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science.
CSU, Chico’s victory was achieved by winning the most points in individual rounds, where students were asked questions similar to those on the national registration exam that is required to become a registered dietician, including on the topics of food science, food service administration, nutrition science and clinical nutrition.
The Nutrition Bowl was sponsored by the Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, and marked the return of the annual event after a three-year hiatus. CSU, Northridge, San Jose State University and San Francisco State also competed with teams.
CSU, Chico’s Department of Nutrition and Food Science provides students with a broad educational background in the science of food and nutrition management. Facilities include a food and sensory laboratory for courses and research in food science and nutrition. Students learn to use software programs for nutrition analyses, food cost control, and recipe and menu evaluation.
