"Book in Common"
"The Yellow Bird" by Kevin Powers for Academic Year 2013-2014 Announced
California State University, Chico President Paul Zingg and Butte College President Kimberly Perry jointly announced today that the Book in Common for Academic Year 2013-2014 will be “The Yellow Birds,” by Kevin Powers. “We are pleased to join together to make this announcement,” said Drs. Zingg and Perry. “Since the Book in Common became a joint project of our campuses, the City of Chico and County of Butte, we have been gratified at the community’s enthusiastic response to the books and the conversations that these books spark.”
The Yellow Birds is a highly acclaimed novel about a soldier’s experiences in the Iraq war, his torn loyalties between a promise made to a friend, his duty as a soldier and the difficulties readjusting to civilian life. The Yellow Birds, a finalist for the National Book Award, is the first novel of Kevin Powers, himself an Iraq War veteran.
“The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have witnessed great acts of valor, immense sacrifice, and intense and difficult experiences for thousands of young American men and women. While these wars have directly touched most – perhaps all – of our families and communities across the nation, they have not occasioned a deep national conversation about the aims of these wars and their costs. We hope this compelling and gripping novel by a veteran will provide an opportunity for our community to have these conversations,” said Zingg.
“Both Butte College and Chico State are deeply committed to serving our veterans. Our hope is that this book will shine a bright light on their sacrifices, struggles and contributions to our community,” said Perry.
The Book in Common is a shared community read designed to promote discussion and understanding of important issues facing the broader community. “The Book in Common aims to create a community of readers and engender the kinds of dialogue that mark a healthy civic culture,” said Zingg.
“We feel that students, staff, faculty and supporters of Butte College will benefit from reading this book and help create a shared sense of purpose in our community,” said Perry.
The Book in Common is chosen each year by a group of university faculty and staff and community members. Past community reads include “The Soloist” by Steve Lopez, “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers and the current Book in Common, “Unquenchable” by Robert Glennon. As in past years, Butte College, Chico State, the city and the county will sponsor a variety of events in celebration of the Book in Common including panel discussions, lectures and other public events. Author visits are also part of the Book in Common. Events around “Unquenchable” will continue throughout this academic year. For more information on the Book in Common, see www.csuchico.edu/bic.
