2012 President’s Academic Excellence Award
This award recognizes the graduating student with the highest GPA. Amberlee Amaral distinguished herself as an exceptional scholar by maintaining a perfect GPA in her major, Nursing.
2012 Outstanding Student Leader Award
Students in every college are nominated each year by faculty, based on leadership and service activities. This year the College of Natural Sciences’ Outstanding Student Leader Award, generously funded by Smucker Natural Foods, went to Michelle Ocken.
2012 Outstanding Master’s Thesis
This year’s award went to Brandee Stone, Biological Sciences, for her work titled “Analysis of Environmental Bacteria Capable of Utilizing Reduced Phosphorus Compounds.
2012 Outstanding Presenter Award
Nicholas Vierra, Microbiology, received a $500 award in the 26th Annual California State Student Research Competition for his research on the gene structure of miR-375 to help understand its role in the pathogenesis of diabetes and to facilitate its use as a therapeutic target for those with diabetes.
2012 Floyd L. English Scholarship Recipients
Each year the generosity of Dr. Floyd L. English, alumnus of CSU, Chico, and the Andrew Foundation makes it possible to award 12-20 scholarships to students majoring in programs in the College of Natural Sciences. This year 12 hard-working students shared in the $50,000.00 award!
2012 Outstanding Professor Award
The award of Outstanding Professor is the highest honor awarded to faculty at CSU, Chico. Thomas Mattman, Mathematics and Statistics, received his award in April 2012. At the reception he discussed the Gordian Knot Theory demonstrating how Alexander the Great was able to accomplish the task of untying the knot. It is said whoever untied the knot would become the ruler of the world.
2012 Rotary Educator of the Year
Each year the Rotary Club of Chico has an Honoring Educator’s Program which recognizes six outstanding educators. The six institutions represented were: Fair View H.S., Pleasant Valley H.S., Inspire Charter School, Chico H.S., Butte College, and CSU, Chico. Irene Salter, Science Education, was presented the Educator of the Year Award by the Chico Rotary on April 24th, 2012. Read more...
2012 MERLOT House Cup Award
The Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching - MERLOT awarded the 2012 Editorial Board House Cup to The Biology Editorial Board, which includes our very own Jeff Bell, Biological Sciences. The MERLOT House Cup recognizes contributions made to the MERLOT collection during an academic year.
2012 Professional Achievement Honors Recipients
This honor recognizes faculty who have excelled as teacher/scholars during the past three years. The Faculty Recognition and Support Committee selected Leslie Atkins, Science Education, and Erik Wasinger, Chemistry, for their exemplary work. Read more…
The 8th Annual College of Natural Sciences Poster Session
The Poster Session was held in April 2012 in the renovated Colusa Hall Conference Room. The poster session highlights the amazing research that faculty and students are conducting throughout the year, in the classroom, lab, and field. This year featured 78 posters submitted by students and faculty in all departments of our college. People’s Choice Awards were presented by Dean Harmsen and went toAndrew Harp and Professor Rachel Teasdale for their poster titled, “Petrographic Analysis of Nomlaki Tuff Lithics as a Method for locating the Source Vent.”Denton Scott and Shane Mayor, PhD, for their poster titled, “Real-Time control System for the Raman-shifted-Eye-Safe Aerosol Lindar (REAL).”Lisa Gaston and Professor Todd Greene for their poster titled, “Relating pre-MTD (Mass Transport Deposits) Boundary conditions to MTD seismic facies in deep water deposits of western Gulf of Mexico.”
