College of Natural Sciences - CSU, Chico

Scholarship Programs

The College of Natural Sciences, in partnership with alumni, parents, friends, and industry, is committed to providing opportunities through scholarships to students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and/or financial need.

Although the Governor of California has promised to make education accessible to anyone who wants to pursue it, more and more students find it harder to obtain a degree due to lack of funds. Students work more and take fewer courses in order to survive.

In order to be eligible for scholarships within the College of Natural Sciences students must complete the CSU, Chico online scholarship application, right here.

Scholarships may be awarded annually in amounts up to $5,000, with a four-year $20,000 total award possible for freshmen. The deciding criteria for the award is the student's potential for achievement in a profession that is science or mathematics based. Information to apply for the 2008-09 awards will be posted after the fall 2007 semester.

A reception honoring the 2007-2008 scholarship recipients awarded 14 Floyd English Natural Sciences Scholarships and brought three past recipients to the event in the Warrens' Reception Center on May 11, 2007.

The generosity of Dr. Floyd L. English, alumnus of California State University, Chico and the Andrew Foundation, marked its 10th year anniversary April 29, 2005.  At a reception honoring 16 scholarship recipients, Dean James Houpis and Roger Lederer, who was the College Dean when the scholarship was established, shared personal and professional stories about Floyd English and his on-going commitment to the college. Much to everyone's surprise, it was revealed that Dr. English was not at the top of his class during his freshman year. Realizing he needed to take his education more seriously, he hit the books his sophomore year and stayed the course, a change that led him to a stellar career in the telecommunications industry. Read more about Dr. English on the Distinguished Alumni page.

Dr. English is a humble man, friendly and very approachable. He did not want the scholarship to be in his name. It was at the insistence of Lederer that the scholarship was named after Floyd.
