Katherine Reese - President

Katherine Reese

As President of NSSLHA at California State University, Chico I oversee the work of the wonderful officers that make our NSSLHA chapter as successful as it is. My goal has always been to provide leadership and encouragement to my peers in Communication Disorders. I think being a student leader on this campus is one of the best things a student can do for not only the university, but for themselves. I am very proud to be able to surround myself with such a great group of NSSLHA officers this year. I chose Communication Sciences and Disorders so I could enter into an aspect of the medical field that I feel very passionate about: speech. I have a keen interest in public speaking and speech and debate, and have always valued the ability to communicate effectively in a public setting. I hope to help others reach their potential communicating confidently. My goals are to enter the medical field working in hospitals as an SLP, and eventually study for a PhD and open a private practice.

Kyle Crowley - Vice President

Kyle Crowley

My name is Kyle Crowley, and I am the NSSLHA Vice President for the 2012-2013 academic year. I have always been interested in working in the health care profession, and I am especially drawn to serving our aging population. I was encouraged to research the speech-language pathology program at Chico State, and after becoming immersed into the major's course load, I discovered I had a genuine interest in the program. My experience in the classroom and in my volunteer work has convinced me that this is the career for me, and I hope to have a positive impact on the people I serve in the future.

Marrisa Forrest - Treasurer

Marrisa Forrest

Hi, I'm Marissa Forrest. I initially became interested in the major of Communication Sciences and Disorders because my mom has been a Speech Therapist in the schools for almost 25 years. I enjoyed watching different therapy sessions and learning more about the profession. As of now, I would like to work in elementary schools with young children. I grew up living in different countries, so I would love to travel and see how therapy differs around the world!

Maragret Haddorff - Social Chair

Margaret Haddorff

Hey guys! I am the Co-Social Chair/PR officer. I chose to be in Communication Sciences and Disorders because of personal experience with speech therapy when I was younger. It changed my life then and that is why I want to continue in this field as my career! My goal is to work in an small town, elementary school with children diagnosed with speech and language disorders when I complete my masters degree. I currently work as a coach of jr. high volleyball teams, run elementary volleyball skills clinics on the weekends, and officiate adult volleyball.

Anna Meehan - Social Chair

Anna

Hi! I am Anna Marie Meehan and I am happy to be serving as NSSLHA's Co-Social Chair/P.R. Officer. I look forward to coordinating speakers for NSSLHA meetings, as well as connecting NSSLHA to local happenings & promoting NSSLHA at local events. I have lived in Chico with my son since 2006 so I am well connected with the local community:) I earned my Bachelor's of Arts from University of California, Santa Cruz and hold a valid multiple subject BCLAD (Spanish) teaching credential from California State University, San Bernardino. I worked for Corning Unified School District as a Reading Specialist and I have been working as a tutor for grades K-12 for almost a decade. I am currently completing the coursework necessary to enter the Master's program to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. I love working with people and especially with children. As a parent, I enjoy talking with parents about their children's needs and areas of success and enjoy when I can speak Spanish in this capacity . As a vocalist, I want to help others find their 'voice' -as in the language of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) for the human need "to hear and to be heard".

Kendra Schmid - Secretary

Kendra Schmid

I am grateful to have been elected to the position of Secretary of NSSLHA! I really wanted this position, because I believe that NSSLHA provides a fantastic opportunity for future SLPs to connect and learn together (and I really enjoy writing and organization). I chose this major, because I am interested in the medical and education fields; Speech-language Pathology is a beautiful combo of these two interests. Next summer, I am off to Italy to enjoy the sights there with my mom before starting graduate school in the Fall. After that, I intend to work with the geriatric population because I have great experience working with the elderly and have a great love for them.

Brendan Eggen - Fundraising Committee

Brendan Eggen

Hello my name is Brendan "Eggz" Eggen, and I am a member of the fundraising team. I aspire to become a bilingual speech therapist. I studied abroad for a year in Bilbao, Spain. Since then I decided to double major. Once I am certified to practice, I would like to explore all realms that Speech Therapy has to offer. As of now I am very interested in working for the "First Start" program, preferably with the spanish speaking population. My hobby is making music. My band is named YNF, which stands for Why Not Flow. Here is a link to some of our music ynfmusic.bandcamp.com. Enjoy.

Katie Cresci - Fundraising Committee

Marrisa Forrest

Hey everyone! My name is Katie Cresci. I was previously a Junior- Rep last year for the junior class and this year I am a senior serving as one of the fundraisers in the 2012-2013 school year. I fell in love with this major as soon as I got introduced to it. I knew this was where I was meant to be! Once I graduate, I plan on going into a Master's Program to further my career as a Speech Language Pathologist. My absolute passion is working with little kids, and I hope to enter into the elementary school environment so I can work with young children who have speech impediments. Currently, I am a student-employee working as a barista on campus at Common Grounds, don't be shy to say hi! :)

Jenny Magee - Fundraising Committee

Jenny

Hi! I'm Jenny Magee and I am a fundraiser. I am so happy that I get to be an officer in NSSLHA this year! I am exciting for all the new fundraising opportunities and great contributions to the club. I was introduced to speech language pathology through an internship my senior year of high school at a local elementary school. I fell in love with the practice of helping others! My future goals are to get my masters degree and work in private practice. Other facts about me are that I am a certified horseback riding instructor and have been riding since I was 7. I love to teach and hope to carry my skills into my future profession :)

Jessica Alvarez - Fundraising Committee

Jessica

My name is Jessica Alvarez and I am currently a senior in the CMSD program here at Chico and a fundraising chair for NSSLHA. Growing up with a sister who attended weekly therapy for her speech and a best friend whose mother was a Speech-Language Pathologist, I have always been interested in this career path. I hope to one day work in hospitals providing treatment to patients with TBIs, dementias, aphasias, apraxias, etc. I am so excited to enter the SLP world and am so glad that I am able to give back to my "speechie" community through NSSLHA!

Tara Carlson - Webmaster

Tara

Hey all. I'm Tara Carlson, the webmaster for NSSLHA for this academic year. My main reason for choosing Speech Language Pathology as my career path was because I became drawn to working with children with special needs. When I was only 12, I nannied a young child with a moderate to severe case of Autism. I instantly became interested in working with these children so I decided to take my passion to the next level. I continued nannying, and have worked in special education classrooms and at a special needs camp all throughout high school and college. Since then, my passion has only become stronger and I hope to pursue a career working with children on the autism spectrum. I'm also quite the "closet" computer nerd and am very happy to have the opportunity to apply my [minimal] skills (as well as learning new ones) to making this website!

Steven Sanguinetti - Junior Representative

Steven

Hello, my name is Steven Sanguinetti and I am one of three junior representatives this year. As a child I had several ear infections that hindered my ability to develop speech and language. Now in college, I am studying Communication Sciences and Disorders and I plan to help the people who have had similar speech difficulty as I have by becoming a Speech and Language Therapist. I have not yet decided whether I would like to work in a private firm, school or hospital setting or whether to work with children or adults. Through my major classes and as I learn more about my chosen profession, I hope to develop a specific preference. One thing I am certain about is that when I consider my past, present and future I could not think of a more gratifying profession as this one. I am excited to be a part of NSSLHA and for what my future holds.

Rebecca Wion - Junior Representative

Becca

Hi, my name is Rebecca Joy Wion and I am a junior representative for National Student Speech, Hearing and Language Association. I desired to be in this role so that I could create a bridge of communication between the junior and senior class. I am extremely honored to be in this position and hope to use it in the best way possible. I have many reasons for being in this major, but the biggest is to help people, specifically children, communicate; therefore, once I graduate I want to work with elementary aged children. I also love hanging out with others, being challenged, and serving others. I am excited to be in this major and to help my fellow students succeed.
