School of Nursing - CSU, Chico
The School of Nursing at CSU, Chico has a long involvement with community service and service learning. Since the school was founded, we have combined a program of academic study linked to community service. Student reflection through seminars and clinical conferences have reinforced student awareness of the world's health problems and the social policies that are needed to make positive, long-lasting changes to improve the health of individuals both locally and globally.
With the rapidly changing health care system and methods of care delivery, service learning provides nursing students with the opportunity to get involved and make a positive difference in someone's life. Students participate in a service oriented clinical program, which has increased the capacity of many public and private agencies in a five county area.
The School of Nursing service learning projects benefit the health needs of high-risk groups with prevention projects for blindness and sudden infant death syndrome, tobacco use, and tuberculosis. Other projects have provided education for breast cancer early detection, red ribbon week, and health care for the homeless.
The School of Nursing offers three distinct service learning courses as part of the curriculum. These courses are designed to teach critical thinking and problem solving as they relate to how persons participate in health care in the real world. As students discover community health care issues, they become aware of the need for involvement in the shaping of health policy.
Students participate in hands-on experiences with many ages, cultures and socioeconomic groups. As they master nursing theory they also develop a sense of civic responsibility. CSU, Chico School of Nursing students are active in more than 50 agencies and have touched thousands of lives with their commitment to service!
