Biographical Information
Carol Jorgensen Huston, MSN, MPA, DPA, has been a professor of nursing at California State University, Chico (CSUC) since 1982. She served as Master Teacher for CSUC from 1999-2001 and was named Outstanding Teacher for CSU, Chico for 2001/2002. In 2008/2009, she was named the Outstanding Professor for CSU, Chico. In January 2010, she assumed the position of Director of the School of Nursing.
Dr. Huston also taught part time in the MSNE and MSN/Family Nurse Practitioner program at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA from 1998-2006, teaching health finance, health systems, and outcomes measurement.
Dr. Huston is the co-author of four textbooks on leadership, management, and professional issues in nursing (a combined 14 editions) and has published over 80 articles in leading professional journals. Her co-authored book, "Leadership Roles and Management Functions in Nursing" has been translated into five languages and "Management Decision Making for Nurses" was an AJN book of the year. She is also the co-developer of the Marquis-Huston Model for Teaching Critical Thinking, which has been recognized internationally by nurse scholars. She also serves on the editorial board for Journal of Nursing Scholarship and as a manuscript reviewer for multiple other journals. In November 2007, she was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.
Professional affiliations include ANA-California and Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI). Dr. Huston is a recognized N-STAT leader for ANA-California. She is also the past president of the local chapter of STTI, held the designation of "Distinguished Lecturer" by STTI (five biennia), and served as the Region 1 Coordinator of STTI from 1999-2001. As Region I Coordinator, Dr. Huston coordinated chapter activities for 20,000 nurses in the Western United States, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Australia, and Canada.
In November, 2001, she was elected to a four year term of the Board of Directors for STTI. As a director, she was responsible for strategic planning, program implementation, and fiduciary oversight of approx. 128,000 nurses in over 425 chapters, in 58 countries. In Nov. 2005, Dr. Huston was elected to the position of President-Elect of STTI. In Nov. 2007, she began a two year term as president.
Dr. Huston is a frequent speaker at professional meetings and has keynoted more than 250 presentations at nursing and healthcare conferences worldwide. Her research interests include critical thinking, mentoring, outcomes measurement, quality health care, empowerment of the nursing profession, and the impact of the staffing mix on quality of health care.
