Tips for Pre-Nursing Students
All students must declare pre-nursing as their major. You cannot be a nursing major until you have been accepted into the School of Nursing (SON). If you declared another major, and have not changed to pre-nursing, you may have difficulty registering for classes. Many majors require that students meet with advisors every semester or year. If you have not met with your advisor and/or taken courses in your declared major, that major may put a block on your ability to register.
Carol Leedom is the advisor for all pre-nursing students. Advising hours will be posted on her door and listed above.
We recommend that you only try the 5-year plan for completing the pre-requisite, general education and nursing courses. You will need the additional time to work toward great grades in the pre-requisites. The four year plan is very demanding and many students have not done well in their prerequisites, making it harder to get into nursing.
Beginning with Fall 2007 application period (for students starting the nursing program Spring 2008), the chancellor’s office has mandated that the only test to be used for admission to the School of Nursing be the TEAS. All students should plan on taking the TEAS. The dates, application and application deadline are on the SON Web site. If the TEAS is taken at another college, you will need to have ATI e-mail your results to the School of Nursing
If you are interested in applying to other schools of nursing, visit the BRN Web site for addresses. This Web site is linked to all nursing programs in California.
We recommend that you have a back-up plan (other school or major), in case you are not admitted to Chico’s nursing program. Only 1 of every 5-6 applicants is currently being admitted.
Check the School of Nursing Web site at California State University, Chico and your campus portal e-mail frequently for updates and changes.
If you are applying for points in allied health experience section of the application form (second priority language, disadvantaged educational or economic background, leadership/community service, or permanent residence), you need proof. For second language taken at the high school level, you need to submit a high school transcript. For permanent residence, you will be provided an additional form to fill out. For the other 4 categories, you will need a letter of support from an advisor, religious leader, teacher, social worker who can speak to your abilities in that category. The letters from these people need to be on official letterhead stationary, and you need to receive the letter as soon as possible. You need to keep the letters in a safe place and retain a copy for your records at all times. All supplemental data is due with the application form — November 1 for admission to the spring semester and March 1 for admission to the fall semester.
The Nursing Application will be available online at our Web site October 1 and February 1. You will need to download it and fill it out. Bring it and all of your supporting documentation to the Nursing Office by the due date.
Students must submit official transcripts for all colleges attended with their nursing application even if official transcripts have been sent to the Admissions Office; even if you took courses at CSU, Chico.
