Application Process

Spring 2014

Welcome to our new NursingCAS online application process.

Applications are now being processed through NursingCAS. NursingCAS is the online, centralized application service for nursing schools. You can use NursingCAS to apply to CSU Chico and other participating schools. NursingCAS processes your application and transcripts on behalf of the university.

You must have previously applied for admission to CSU Chico. If you are not a student at CSU, Chico, you must apply to the University (online) through CSUMentor during the initial filing period. See deadlines below under "Application Steps and Admission Requirements."

Applicants interested in the basic BSN (five-semester) program apply through NursingCAS. Visit www.nursingcas.org and click “Apply Here” to initiate your application. Then click on “Create Account” and complete the required fields. You can view a short instructional video here on how to complete a NursingCAS application.

Additionally, before you begin the application, please carefully review all information below. Although some sections of the NursingCAS application are marked "optional," please follow the guidelines for CSU Chico requirements. Your application will not be considered until ALL elements listed below are completed and submitted.

It is suggested you attend a Pre-Nursing Advising Session.  The pre-nursing advisor will provide an overview of our program and will give you an opportunity to ask questions.  Registration is not required. Application Steps and Admission Requirements

1) Apply to CSU Chico first! - If you are not a student at CSU, Chico, you must apply to the university (online) through CSU Mentor during the intitial filing period (indicated below) prior to applying to the School of Nursing via NursingCAS.

• Coming to CSU, Chico Fall semester:  Apply to the university October 1 – November 30 the preceding year.
• Coming to CSU, Chico Spring semester:  Apply to the university August 1 - 31 the preceding year.

2) Apply to CSU Chico School of Nursing via NursingCASIn order to be considered for admission to the nursing program, you must complete the NursingCAS application. The deadline is November 1 for entry in the Spring Semester and March 1 for entry in the Fall semester.

Items to be mailed to NursingCAS and submitted via NursingCAS - All official transcripts (even if you are currently enrolled at CSU Chico) must be mailed from each issuing institution’s registrar’s office directly to NursingCAS. In order to expedite the processing, be sure to include the Transcript Request Form. NursingCAS processes your transcripts on behalf of the school. NursingCAS cannot process transcripts stamped with “Issued to Student.”

Additional Information - Required. NursingCAS indicates this is Not-Required, but it is required for CSU,Chico. When asked for "Type," enter "CSU, Chico Student ID." Then enter your 9-digit CSU Chico ID Number.

Education Section 

Secondary (High) School - Required
(Unofficial transcripts from High School not required unless requesting foreign language points; must have at least three years of a priority language.)

Colleges attended and College Degrees - Required
Coursework - Required

Be sure to have a copy of your (unofficial) transcript(s) in hand in order to complete this section.
All college level course work (including in-progress course work) must be entered into the application in this section. Note: All prerequisite and co-requisite courses should be entered as 'non-nursing' courses. There is a short, instructional video posted on NursingCAS on how to accurately complete this section. This will be the most time-consuming aspect of the application process.

If you would rather have NursingCAS staff enter in your coursework data on your behalf, then you have the option of paying an additional fee to use the Coursework Entry Service.  Click here to learn more about the service. TEAS - Required
In this section please enter in the date you took TEAS exam and your Adjusted Individual Total Score.

Note:  Students must achieve a minimum level of 80% (Adjusted Individual Total Score) on the test to be eligible to apply to CSU, Chico’s School of Nursing.  All versions of the TEAS are acceptable.  The TEAS can be taken at any time, any number of times, and at any testing facility.  If taking the test at CSU, Chico, a copy of the test will be automatically e-mailed from ATI directly to the School of Nursing.  If the test is taken at another ATI testing site, results must be ordered from ATI and e-mailed by ATI directly to the CSU, Chico School of Nursing. 

The results of the TEAS must be received in the School of Nursing office by the application deadline date.  If applying to the School of Nursing for fall, the deadline date is March 1 of the same year; if applying to the Nursing School for spring, the deadline is November 1 of the prior year.

Professional Experience - Required only if it applies to you.
In this section, please input your health-related work experience OR list your volunteer experience of at least 60 hours. Input any information regarding your CNA, LVN, RT, HHA, EMT I, EMT II/Paramedic certification, Corpsman certification, and/or if you have worked as a Certified Animal Health Tech, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant, Hemodialysis Technician, EKG Technician, Lifeguard, Phlebotomist, Lab Tech, Vet Tech, Ward Clerk, or any other relevant experience.
Note:  Points are awarded based on either volunteer or health–related experience, not both.  

References - Not required
Personal Statement - Not required

Document Upload – Required

Any supporting verification documents pertaining to requirements must be signed and on business letterhead to be considered for admissions points.  

Once you have uploaded your documents, you need to go to "Designations" on the application checklist and click on "Designated Schools" and click on California State University, Chico. At the bottom of that page, there is a section that says, "Attach Document Uploads" where you will be able to select your documents from a drop-down menu.

The documents in the following five categories MUST be uploaded in the Documents Upload section.

Note:  You cannot upload more than five documents.  If you have more than five documents to upload, please combine at least two of the documents into one.

1.  Foreign Language Proficiency - Priority languages include: Spanish, Southeast Asian languages, Filipino/Tagalog, East Indian languages, California Indian languages, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and American Sign Language.

Fluency in priority languages will be given the highest points. Upload documentation of your fluency level, in the form of a verification letter from a language teacher. The verification letter should indicate your ability to converse with native speakers at a normal conversational level.

Intermediate level proficiency in a priority language (see list above) verified by unofficial college transcripts (at least two years of a foreign language), by unofficial high school transcripts (at least three years), or by written verification from a language teacher.

Non-priority languages (those not listed above) will receive one point. Proficiency should be documented as in the categories above. 

2.  Volunteer or Health Related Experience - Upload a copy of verification of volunteer hours.  Be sure the verification indicates the name of the facility where you volunteered and the number of hours completed.  OR upload a copy of verification of healthcare-related experience.  Be sure the verification indicates the position, name of employer, and duration of employment.  If you have formal education in a health care field (such as CNA, LVN, RT), upload applicable license or certificate.

3.  Requirement to Work - Applicants who work 20 or more hours per week for the last six months will need to submit a verification letter from the employer. Upload a verification letter from employer that includes your name, position, place of employment, and hours worked per week.

4.  Rural Residency - If you have indicated you are a permanent resident of Butte, Colusa, Del Notre, Glenn, Humboldt, Lassen, Mendocino, Lake, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, or Yuba County, please click here to download the form.

5.  California Veteran Status - If you are a California veteran, a California resident with honorable discharge then upload a copy of your Member 2 or 4 of DD214.


Privacy Statement - Required
Designations - Required
In this section, select California State University, Chico BSN program.  Scroll down to find our school listing and click on box underneath “Apply” and click on “Submit.”  If CSU Chico is the only school to which you are applying through NursingCAS, then you will be charged $45. If you are applying to other schools through NursingCAS, there will be an additional charge of $30 per school. Access FAQs for information on the payment process.

Deadline - The deadline for the Spring Semester is November 1 and the deadline for the Fall Semester is March 1.  ALL required admissions materials must be submitted by the deadline.
All official transcripts must be submitted to NursingCAS in order for your application to be processed and verified for CSU Chico to review.

Monitor the Status of Your Application - The “My Messages” section of the NursingCAS application will include any messages that NursingCAS or a school has sent to you. Please check “My Messages” to see if you have received any vital information about your application. Messages will be sent to the “My Messages” inbox and your personal email address with which you created your account.

Use the “Quick Status Menu” options to check to see your Transcript(s) or Payment(s) have been received after you submit them. To check to see which schools you have selected, click on the Designations option under the Quick Status menu. The GPA Calculations option under the Quick Status menu will display any GPA calculations NursingCAS has generated for you based on the coursework data you entered. Your application has been “verified” once your GPA calculations are complete. Learn more about “verification.”
