It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. Keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. New Musical Theatre faculty member Mike Mazur directs this old favorite, with choreography by Susan Hargrave Pate. Orchestra conducted by Kyle Wiley Picket, conductor of the North State Symphony. Katherine Punteney will present a talk “Vacationing with the Villains: An American Woman’s Experience in Iran” at the International Forum on May 8, at 5pm - 6pm. Katherine Punteney is CSU, Chico’s International Student Advisor, teaches Asian Studies, and has lived in India and Japan. She has an M.A. degree in International Education. In her talk, she will reflect on her trip to Iran in March 2007. She will compare her expectations as they were shaped by the media before she left with the realities of daily life she observed, and the warm welcome she received.

Watershed, CSU, Chico’s student-edited literary magazine since 1977, celebrates its 30th anniversary with a special reading and reception. An anniversary double issue of the magazine includes work from current writers as well as a retrospective section, “Thirty from Thirty,” featuring work from the magazine’s 30 years of publication. Please join us to hear local writers read their work.
Reception to follow.
Watershed magazine is edited by students in the Literary Editing and Publishing Certificate Program in the Department of English. The special anniversary issue will be available at the reading for $10.
Watershed is supported by funding from Instructionally Related Activities, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, and the Department of English. This reading is part of the Writer’s Voice Reading series.

The University Art Gallery presents the 52nd Annual Juried Student Exhibition of works by students enrolled in the Department of Art and Art History. Sixty-six students submitted 98 pieces for consideration. Guest juror Berin Golonu, Associate Visual Arts Curator, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, selected 30 pieces for the exhibition.
The selections represent a broad range of approaches and media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, video and glass. Ms. Golonu also awarded 4 prizes - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a special Dean’s prize - all of which will remain a state secret until they are announced at the May 11 College of Humanities and Fine Arts’ gala “Celebration of Student Achievement” (see below).

Dr. Nomura has been growing his straight black hair for several years and now is ready to donate his approximately three feet of hair to Locks of Love. We challenge the community to help us raise $500 per inch of hair, for a total of $18,000. Dr. Nomura’s hair will be shorn on the Bell Memorial Union (BMU) Auditorium stage on Sunday, May 13, 2007 from 6pm - 9pm at the public event Inch by Inch: Sustaining Health Across Cultures.

Ceremony for graduating students in the Colleges of Communication and Education (including Liberal Studies), Humanities and Fine Arts, International and Interdisciplinary Studies (includes Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, Jewish Studies, Special Majors, and Multicultural and Gender Studies) and Natural Sciences.
The Black Commencement Celebration will be held from 1-3 pm in Harlen Adams Theatre (PAC 144).
The Latino Commencement Celebration will be held from 1-3 pm in Laxson Auditorium.
The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management will have a graduation celebration ceremony in Laxson Auditorium on Saturday, May 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
