"Compassionate Baby Boomers: Aging as a Path of Awakening for a Generation of Sages" Group

Time: 12:05 PM

Location: 25 Main Street, Suite 202

Our society is strangely reluctant to appropriate the wisdom that accompanies growing older. We seem to be frightened of the potential power of a generation of Sages, Wise Women, and Elders. Is this fear going to determine how we live our lives, or will the “Boomer” generation be the vanguard of a new and powerful way of living, loving, and serving? This group series will explore the possibility that aging is far different than we have been conditioned to expect. We will gently and openly look at all aspects of living and growing older - work, retirement, health, spirituality, loss, grief and ultimate meaning - from the perspective of becoming true “Sages” - people at home with ourselves, our lives, and our work.

Date: Tuesdays, October 2 - November 6, 2007
Time: 12:05pm - 12:55pm
Facilitator: William Martin, M. Div., author of The Sages Tao Te Ching

Politics and the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing presented by Dr Weikun Cheng, History Department.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics have provoked enormous national pride in China and have engaged both the government and the mass population in a beautifying-Beijing/China movement. Classic Rock: An Evening with Jethro Tull Plus a Very Special Guest

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Laxson Auditorium

Jethro Tull’s mix of hard rock, folk melodies, blues licks, and surreal lyrics defies easy analysis, but that didn’t dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums, for records such as Benefit, Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, and Living in the Past. With a unique combination instruments and Ian Anerson’s exceptional vocals, and flute- and guitar-playing, Jethro Tull’s sound has, and still does, define an era of music that lives along with other power-house groups like Yes and Led Zepplin. Since their start in 1967, the group carved a place all its own in popular music.

CAPE Forum: Universal Health Care: Does Justice Require It or Forbid It?

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: PAC 134

Should California or the U.S. enact legislation designed to bring health insurance to all? Clearly, some people are luckier than others when it comes to their health, both in terms of their natural endowments and their access to adequate care. Are the differences unjust, or merely unfortunate? Does our commitment to equality, the notion that everyone’s life matters and matters equally, require us to meet everyone’s basic health care needs? Or does our commitment to liberty require us to refrain from forcing our fellow citizens to pay for the care of others?

Altruism: For Saints, Suckers or Everyone?

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: PAC 134

We are often surprised and appreciative when we observe an act of selfless good will. But are these acts truly selfless, or are they really motivated by self-interest? Do the charitable give simply to make themselves feel better, or are they genuinely concerned with the well-being of others? Is human nature essentially selfish? Evolution might favor selfishness since it would seem to promote one’s reproductive interests. But then altruistic acts should be rarer than they are. Even if we are inclined by nature to egoism shouldn’t we at least sometimes act for the benefit of others? Should we always do so? Or never? Come hear what contemporary biological psychological and moral theories tell us about the nature of altruism.

Humanities Center Gallery in September: Patrick Collentine and Susan Larsen, DESIRE

Time: 7:00 AM

Location: Humanities Center Gallery Trinity Hall, M-F 8-5 Opening Reception 6-8pm Sept. 7 - Oct. 25

Pat Collentine and Susan Larsen return with the latest in their “Kolorbar” series for their third show at the Humanities Center Gallery (in the past: Dec. ‘02 and Apr. ‘04). The series is an ongoing exploration originally inspired by a trip to southeast Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park in 1995. The inclusion of the kolorbar in the photos became a conceptual verification for the glaciers’ size and color. “The photos are part performance, part photography. The act of taking a kolorbar photograph is absurd,” write the artists. “‘What the hell is that person doing standing behind a multicolored strip of vinyl and having a picture taken?’” Larsen and Collentine have collaborated on several public art projects and just completed Wanders in a Riparian Garden, a three-part sculpture installed in Sacramento’s Regency Park. They are represented by Augen Gallery (Portland, OR).

Gypsy Music: Musafir

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Laxson Auditorium

Musafir (“Traveler” in Farsi) hails from northwest India and has dazzled European audiences with its energetic versions of Indian folk and popular music, acrobatics, and feats of physical endurance. Musafir’s original compositions combine Indian rural folk music with influences from Muslim devotional music, Indian film music, Arab popular music, and North Indian classical music. From an ancient tradition of wandering artists who went from village to village living as snake charmers, performing dances whose contortions evoke the movement of the dancing cobra — the Musafir musicians are joined by traditional Sapera dancers and high-flying Fakir acrobatics.
