Come enjoy the night before Christmas in an Irish farmhouse, where neighbors have gathered to celebrate with the laughter of their stories, the joy of their music, and the exuberance of their traditional dances. A Celtic Christmas is a remembrance of a way of life that is no longer with us, where ordinary Irish men and women celebrated the holidays with jigs, reels and hornpipes, the rafters rang with the traditional music of the fiddle, bodhran, tin whistle, and uilleann pipes, and stories were told around the roaring fire.

Masami Toku will be talking about how Japanese popular culture, especially Shojo Manga (Japanese girls’ comics), has had an impact on visual literacy worldwide. Toku is the curator of the North American touring exhibition Girls’ Power! Shojo Manga!, which started in Chico in Oct. ‘05 and ends in Vancouver in Nov. ‘07 after traveling to nine sites in North America. This exhibition shows how the genre of girls’ comics has changed over the years to reflect girls’ and women’s social roles. She will give an overview of the exhibition, the most comprehensive of the history of Shojo Manga anywhere.

Public health debates in Africa: A Traveler’s Snapshot
AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis top the list of public health threats throughout much of the developing world. This is especially true in Africa, where these diseases jeopardize the social, political, and economic stability of many countries. Lisa Emmerich recently traveled to southern Africa and will offer a series of “traveler’s snapshots” of some of the most pressing current public health concerns facing the citizens of South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia.

“Historic Spain and Portugal”
The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is sponsoring a tour for students, staff, faculty, and the community to Spain and Portugal, June 1-12, 2008. The faculty-in-residence is Professor Lewis, who earned his PhD from UC San Diego. His specialty is Latin American history, and he has done extensive research on Mexico. His association with Spain spans twenty years, first as a student and most recently as a visiting professor. It is possible for CSU, Chico students to earn 1-3 units through the Department of History.
This tertulia will introduce some of the highlights of the tour including Lisbon’s Ajuda Palace and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Mérida’s Roman Amphitheatre and National Museum of Roman Art, Córdoba’s Mezquita, Granada’s Alhambra, El Greco’s Home and the Cathedral in Toledo, and the Prado, Royal Palace, and Reina Sofia in Madrid.

If you plan to spend time in the backcountry you need to be prepared. Fast paced and hands-on, this two day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel and work in the outdoors. Days are filled with dynamic lessons and exciting, realistic scenarios to best model the kind of medical situations you might face, whether you’re an outdoor educator, guide, camp counselor or just someone who enjoys being outside with friends.
This course may be used to recertify Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion only) certifications.

What in the world is a yurt? Who was Carl Miller and how did he end up with a yurt named after him? A yurt is a backcountry hut complete with a wood stove to keep you warm at night. You’ll have to come to find out about Carl. The trek into the yurt is a little over a mile and is great for beginners and experts. Depending on conditions you’ll be free to spend the day skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing. Or, if being outside isn’t your cup of tea then kick back and relax by the fireplace. Picture yourself, after a day in one of nature’s most beautiful wonderlands, sitting in a cozy yurt around the fire, sipping a cup of hot cocoa.
