Museum of Anthropology Presents Dr. Mike Findlay for a Discussion of the Piraha of Brazil

Time: 4:00 PM

Location: 4pm - 5pm, Selvester's Cafe

Dr. Mike Findlay will be at Selvester’s Cafe to discuss the special linguistic qualities of the Amazonian people, the Piraha of Brazil. Recently studied, their language offers new insights into traditional theories about human language development.

Dr. Findlay, a professor at CSU, Chico and Butte College, is a linguistics specialist who will be discussing the work of Dan Everett, a linguistics professor at Illinois State University, who challenged the commonly accepted belief that humans are genetically predisposed to learning universal complex language and grammar rules.

Dr. Everett disputes this theory by using his research of the Piraha clan. The Piraha language has only three vowels and eight consonants. According to Everett, the Piraha do not have the ability to combine statements into complex sentences. These statements of the Piraha culture have led to the extreme criticism of Everett’s work from the believers of the universal grammar theory.

Everyone who is interested is welcome to come and engage in the discussion.

Film Series: Abel Raises Cain

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Ayres 106

University Film Series
$3 suggested donation
898-4642

(2006, U.S.A.) 82 min.

Directed by Jenny Abel and Jeff Hockett.

Perfect for April Fools, the documentary Abel Raises Cain has been winning awards at the Slamdance, Brooklyn Underground, Newport International, and Sarasota Film Festivals. Long before the deluge of reality TV dolts who drum up media attention with acts of idiocy, there was Alan Abel, a culture-jamming comic with a conscience. The director of the 1970s cult films Is There Sex after Death? and The Faking of the President, Abel made a name for himself several times over with media stunts ridiculous enough to be believable. His mock-moral crusade “Citizens against Breastfeeding” stirred controversy in the late ’90s, just as his “Society for Indecency to Naked Animals” had in the ’60s. Both groups made asinine calls for morality in America, and while both were complete jokes, for long stretches, the only one in on the jokes was Abel himself. Jenny Abel has directed this film about her father, the professional prankster, hailed by some journalists as the world’s greatest hoaxer and scorned by others as a menace to the media.

The intersection of politics and graphic art in Cuba presented by Dr. Sara Cooper, Foreign Languages and Literatures

Contemplating the series of events that transpired in Cuba and the United States between January 1, 1959 and December 2, 1961, one can easily see an absurd political tit-for-tat in which each country tried to establish itself as king of the sandbox. Nowhere does this play itself out more remarkably than in the Cuban funny papers, where in the great tradition of caricature worldwide, Cuban graphic artists vilified the United States, called into question US power and manhood, and taunted Uncle Sam to test the resolve of the Cuban people to resist invasion and political control. In this presentation, Dr. Cooper discusses several examples of political cartoons from 1959-1962 and 1998-2007 in order to demonstrate the humorous (and childish) development of the Cuban anti-US position during those years.

(1922, Sweden) 104 min.

Directed and written by and starring Benjamin Christensen. Introduced by Jason Nice, History and Humanities Center Board.

Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: this legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious—instead it’s a witches’ brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous.

Psychedelic Rock Concert: The Pink Floyd Experience

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Laxson Auditorium

A Pink Floyd concert was more than a concert — it was an experience. The Pink Floyd Experience recreates this in a live music performance and massive light show that recreates the images Pink Floyd made their own — 45-foot walls crumbling to the stage, a helicopter introducing the next song. Hear the cash registers in “Money” or the clocks in “Time” in full quadraphonic sound. There’s even a 12-foot long pig that flies over the audience in final homage to Pink Floyd’s most familiar image! Whether it’s the classic airplane crash or floating eyeballs in the crowd, it’s all combined with the power and presence of a laser light show and classic Pink Floyd music.

The Importance of Being Earnest
Introduced by Laura Nice, Humanities and English

Oscar Wilde’s comic jewel sparkles in Anthony Asquith’s film adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest. Featuring brilliantly polished performances by Michael Redgrave, Joan Greenwood, and Dame Edith Evans, the enduringly hilarious story of two young women who think themselves engaged to the same nonexistent man is given the grand Technicolor treatment. Seldom has a classic stage comedy been so engagingly transferred to the screen. (1952, U.K., 95 minutes)
