University Film Series: MadCat Women's International Film Fest, Sept. 2

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Little Theatre (Ayres 106), $3 donation appreciated, 898-4642

University Film Series

MadCat Women’s International Film Festival ID Docs (2005-2006, Lithuania, Croatia, Australia, Germany, U.S.A., Belgium, Austria) about 102 min. Curated by Ariella Ben-Dov.

This is the second visit of MadCat to the University Film Series. First, it was based in San Francisco. Now, it hails from Brooklyn (what doesn’t these days?). Tonight’s program will include seven films: the longest is thirty minutes; the shortest is one.

Identity cannot be reduced to stats on a badge. It is both personal and public, elusive and fixed. Using a patient camera and lyrical imagery, these filmmakers gently probe how society, biology, place, and even appliances play a role in who we are and how we think of ourselves and others.—Ben-Dov

Janis Ian with special guest Dan Navarro, Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter

Time: 7:30 PM

Location: Laxson Auditorium

Who among us doesn’t remember “At Seventeen,” Janis Ian’s hauntingly beautiful tale about how love works? That song earned her five Grammy nominations — the most any single solo female artist has ever garnered. Still going strong 30 years later, Ian’s newest album, Folk is the New Black, boasts the same blunt, finely tuned style she is known for. Now up to nine Grammy nominations, along with two wins, Ian combines her songwriting style and performing talent with a point of view brought on by the wisdom of age. Ian will be performing with special guest folk rocker Dan Navarro. Best known as one half of the duo Lowen & Navarro, he has had guest appearances on albums by Neil Young, Yes, Jose Feliciano, and Julio Iglesias, and has penned songs for Pat Benetar, Dionne Warwick, and the Temptations.

University Film Series: Polanski's KNIFE IN THE WATER

Time: 7:30 PM

University Film Series

Knife in the Water (1962, Poland) 94 min. Directed by Roman Polanski. Hosted by Jason Tannen, University Art Gallery.*

The second protege of the Lodz Film School to become an international art house sensation (after Andrzej Wajda), Polanski pounced on the scene with a mischievous glint in his eye with this film, whose title suggests violence, suspense, and mystery. A minimalist, three-character drama of simmering marital discord, class warfare, and eroticism, Knife constantly thwarts expectations.

* Part of the Humanities Center’s theme this year: Regarding Beauty.

STORY. Pancho is looking forward to his new life in college, away from the barrio, his culture, and way of life. But then he meets his new zany roommates, and together, they discover girls, parties, study time, and multiculturalism in a large Arizona college campus. Can Pancho adapt? Will he survive away from home?

Shot entirely in Southern Arizona, “Pancho Goes To College” is a comedy feast for the eyes and ears. Scenic desert landscapes, crazy college parties, class lectures, rowdy Chicano bars, and an eclectic rock-norteno-hip-hop music soundtrack drives “Pancho Goes To College” as a fast paced coming-of-age comedy with heart.

“A Chicano ‘Animal House’ with heart.” —Tucson Citizen
