CSU, Chico Hosts Science and Engineering Research Symposium “Exploring Opportunities of Tomorrow Today”
It’s predicted that by 2012, businesses will need two million more scientists and engineers.
The California Association of MESA Directors will offer a Science and Engineering Research Symposium for 120 California community college Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement students on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Arroyo Room in downtown Chico and on the California State University, Chico campus.
“The purpose of this event is to expose students from all over California to the many career options, experiences and resources available in mathematics and the sciences. We’ll have speakers discussing new careers and sharing their experiences about many of the new career options out there,” said Dr. Derrick Booth, Butte College MESA and B A STAR director. “Community college students are largely untapped, underrepresented and underexposed to opportunities such as this one. This event helps even the playing field for community college students and provides similar research opportunities and industry support that four-year university students receive.”

New Campus Voice Communication System (PBX)
Following an extensive RFP process, the campus is in the beginning phases of moving from a Centrex (SBC maintained) telephone service to a campus-owned Avaya Hybrid PBX system that is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) enabled. The Avaya system is a leader in the industry and will provide expanded features and functionality.
The implementation will include the replacement of the existing voice mail system, and each faculty and staff member will be receiving a new telephone set to replace their current one. Department phone numbers will remain the same and we expect the transition to our new campus-owned system to be a smooth one. Additional information along with end-user training dates will be provided once they are known.
Expected Timeline: Now through February 2006
Please stay tuned to Announcements for additional information about this exciting upgrade to our voice communication system.
See the Web Site for Frequently Asked Questions and direct any other inquiries to Kim Williams, project coordinator, at kwilliams@csuchico.edu or x6560.
