Computer Graphics Lecture Series: Rusty Mills, Dec. 4

The Computer Graphics Lecture Series will host guest artist Rusty Mills as part of the Computer Graphics Lecture Series in Meriam Library (basement) Studio A - 1pm, Dec. 4.

Mr. Rusty Mills is a Five-time Emmy® Award-winning Producer, Director, and Animator; Mills produced some of the drop dead funniest and well animated cartoons of the last two decades. The hilarious shows, Pinky and the Brain®, and Animaniacs® should ring a bell. Under Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, Mills was a major force in making a huge cast of animated characters. His techniques and gags are reminiscent of the old Warner Bros. shorts.

Rusty’s lecture will discuss the changing landscape in modern animation. He will share a behind the scene glimpse into the making of his Emmy award winning series. Mills will also reveal how traditional animation techniques have evolved, using new digital animation tools yet retaining the magic of bringing characters to life.

This lecture is free to the public. The Computer Graphics Lecture Series is sponsored by Associated Students, The College of ECC, the Computer Science and Art Departments.

If you have questions about this lecture or other lectures in the series, contact Rick Vertolli, x4421.

"Chick Lit" Course Offered During January Intersession

January Intersession Course 2007
Women Writers: “Chick Lit”
ENGL 360 (also WMST 360)
3 Units
Dr. Lynn Houston, Instructor

Modeled after courses on this topic recently instituted into the curriculum at prestigious institutions such as Harvard, the University of Illinois, and Antioch college, this class allows students to identify the major defining characteristics of the genre of contemporary fiction called “chick lit” and seeks to endow students with a sense of the origin/history of this genre as it arises out of eighteenth century British novels written by women, as well as a sense of the relationship that chick lit has to the history of feminism. The course will take the form of what is known as a “hybrid” course, meaning that it meets face-to-face but also has a significant online component. Some of the film adaptations of “chick lit” novels (otherwise known as “chick flicks”) will be viewed and discussed. Our debates surrounding the nature and features of “chick lit” will be the central, organizing factors of this course that will also endow students with a larger sense of the history of women’s writing and of feminist theories.

Register for the course online at the Continuing and Regional Education Web Site

Winter Closure Notice from FMS

Happy Holidays from FMS! Facilities Management and Services will be taking advantage of the campus closure scheduled for Dec. 18, 2006 through Jan. 1, 2007 to schedule various projects that need to be performed when buildings are not occupied. As you know, there will be no heating provided to the campus buildings during this two week closure. During this time, the boiler system will be off which will allow us to repair a steam leak in the main distribution system, perform asbestos abatement in Butte in order to repair several mechanical mixing boxes and coordinate with the State Fire Marshal on annual fire alarm testing. The fire alarm testing in the buildings will be intermittent; however, if you are on campus, we would recommend that you vacate the building when an alarm sounds. As a reminder, all campus buildings will be locked for the entire two weeks. Access to the buildings will need to be with your ID card or a key. You must have this access activated by your supervisor or manager in order to access the building while it is in the after hours mode.

Enjoy your winter break as we get ready for the next semester.

This week Butte Hall became the first building on campus to have a ubiquitous free wireless network. As part of the system wide TII (Technology Infrastructure Initiative) project, Butte Hall now has Wildcat Wireless access points installed on every floor, offering coverage in every office and classroom. Butte Hall was selected for complete wireless coverage to address the increasing demand for network connectivity in a building where asbestos abatement made rewiring prohibitively expensive. January Intersession Course 2007
Women Writers: “Chick Lit”
ENGL 360 (also WMST 360)
3 Units
Dr. Lynn Houston, Instructor

This class allows students to identify the major defining characteristics of the genre of contemporary fiction called “chick lit” (a contemporary novel genre in which thirty-something career women deal humorously with the ups and downs and romantic relationships) and seeks to endow students with a sense of the origin/history of this genre as it arises out of eighteenth century British novels written by women, as well as a sense of the relationship that chick lit has to the history of feminism.

University Film Series: Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Dec. 12

UNIVERSITY FILM SERIES
7:30pm
Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 donation appreciated, 898-4642 Web Site
DEC. 12

Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (1975, USA) 97 min. Directed by Dennis Heroux. Hosted by Laird Easton, Department of History and Humanities Center Director

Eschewing conventional narrative, this film transforms Mort Shuman and Eric Blau’s beloved 35-song stage revue into an infectious movie musical that showcases both Brel’s astonishing songwriting breadth and the resourceful audacity of ’70s filmmaking. Belgian born Brel’s richly sensual, uncompromising, and lyrical songs provide a simultaneously ecstatic and tragic framework for this flamboyant and moving film. Heroux utilizes everything from puppetry to location photography to shepherd Brel’s music far beyond the proscenium-bound horizon. Working from the surreal imagery and concrete emotions with which Brel laced his lyrics, songwriter Mort Shuman (himself co-creator of some of the most memorable hit songs for the Drifters and Elvis Presley) transforms Brel’s French chansons into lushly romantic yet unsentimental English language versions. The showstopper offers Brel himself singing his signature, “Ne Me Quitte Pas,” in a sequence that ranks as one of the most powerfully understated and sincere musical performances ever put on film.
