Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Receives $1 Million Grant To Establish Endowment

The Bernard Osher Foundation has approved a $1 million endowment for California State University, Chico’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).

The foundation has also approved a $50,000 bridge grant award to sustain the program until earnings from the endowment are able to support the program in perpetuity. In 2004, CSU, Chico applied for and received a $100,000 Osher grant, which was followed by two $100,000 grants in successive years.

Debra Barger, dean of CSU, Chico’s Center for Regional and Continuing Education, said the University received the endowment by demonstrating that the prospects for the OLLI’s long-term success and sustainability were very good.

National Disability & Employment Month: DNA - Do Not Assume

This is the theme we are using as we recognize “hidden” disabilities during October, National Disability & Employment Month. One student in 11 is reported to have a disability and the majority of those are not obvious, visible disabilities.

Here’s the web site for activities planned this month: Disability Awareness Month

We’ve used the concept of universal design for some time now when considering physical spaces and physical limitations, i.e.. curb cuts, auto doors, electronic devices. Now it’s time to consider universal design in learning, i.e.. presenting information in more than one format, sharing notes and resources, and being able to demonstrate content in a variety of ways.

To learn more about what the CSU system and CSU, Chico are doing to provide access to electronic information and instructional information visit the web site.

Many departments on campus have been working collaboratively together to develop accessibility standards, and procedures to help insure CSU, Chico is in compliance and accessible for all students, faculty, and staff.

For more information contact Disability Support Services at 898-5959.

2007-08 FRAS Call for Nominations

Do you know someone who has been doing an outstanding job in the classroom, with “professional growth and achievement” activities, providing university service, or advising students? If so, please consider nominating him/her for one of the “Outstanding” awards given annually by FRAS (the Faculty Recognition And Support committee).

In case you missed it, the call for nominations came out a little while ago. The nomination process is fairly easy, and it’s a campus-wide honor to be selected. You can learn more about FRAS and the nomination process at the web site. Help the university recognize the achievements of your friend and colleague, or even have someone nominate you. If you have any questions, or need to know the specific guidelines for nomination, please contact Steve Lewis, Chair of the FRAS Committee @ x6244, or the Academic Senate @ x6201.
