Anyone interested in joining a Persian cultural group on campus?
Anyone who would be interested in joining or helping to form a new group on campus to celebrate and learn about Persian culture and history should contact Allia Homayoun at ahomayoun@mail.csuchico.edu.
Allia and a handful of other students are in the process of submitting the paperwork to start this group and need support from faculty and students on campus who would be interested in attending their events or meetings. Graduate Equity Fellowship for Under-Served Groups
The goal of the Graduate Equity Fellowship Program (GEFP) is to prepare, motivate, encourage and support those graduate students who aspire to obtain a doctorate and pursue an academic career in teaching and research. Awards for an academic year total $5,500. The two-part program provides a stipend of $750/semester and a salary of $2,000/semester for research related activities under the direction of a faculty mentor.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
You must be economically disadvantaged; come from an educationally disadvantaged background/experienced restricted access to quality educational opportunities; be admitted to the University and a master’s degree program; classified as a California resident; and there must be a probable need for faculty in your academic discipline - i.e., a projected shortfall in the supply of qualified faculty in your field of study.
Deadline: April 1 for Fall
November 1 for Spring

AS Sustainability Fund - Call for Proposals!
The AS Sustainability Fund, which was created through the student referendum process in the spring of 2006, is going through its first funding cycle and is seeking innovative proposals from students.
Do you know students who want to work on a project that supports one or more of the facets of sustainability - ecology, economy, and equity? If so, please let them know about this opportunity to get funding for their project.
In order to be eligible to receive funding, students must work with a Project Advisor (faculty, staff, administrator, or community member/organization) and attend one of the three mandatory proposal workshops:

Mandatory Proposal Workshop #2 Oct. 22, 2007, 3pm (BMU 303)

Steve Wasserman: “The Future of the Book in the Digital Age”
October 23, 7:30 pm, Ayres 106, CSU Chico
Steve Wasserman was the literary editor of the Los Angeles Times responsible for the weekly Sunday Book Review. He is currently managing director of the New York office of the literary agency Kneerim & Williams at Fish & Richardson and the new book editor of the web magazine Truthdig.com. Prior to these, he was with Farrar, Straus & Giroux where he was publisher and editorial director of two imprints, Hill & Wang and The Noonday Press. He has been on the nominating jury for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction and was the chairman of the nominating jury for the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction. He has taught at the University of Southern California and UC Berkeley.

In this, one of his most personal films, Atom Egoyan himself plays a photographer hired to capture images of Armenian churches for a calendar. He takes his wife (real-life wife and frequent star Arsinée Khanjian) along as a translator, and, as they travel with their Armenian guide, their relationship begins to unravel. The photographer returns to Canada with his pictures, but without his wife, who has gradually been drawn to her ethnic roots and has fallen in love with the guide.

Geoengineered Climate Change, Panel Presentation and Discussion
The Peace Institute at CSU, Chico presents Rosalind Peterson, Allan Buckmann and Dane Wigington discussing:
“Threats to Agriculture Sustainability & Forest Health Due to Experimental Weather Modification Programs & Geoengineered Climate Change.”

Rosalind Peterson is Co-Founder and President of the Agriculture Defense Coalition based in Northern California. Peterson has served as an Agriculture Technologist with the Mendocino County Agriculture Department. She worked for the CA USDA Farm Service Agency and was a U.S.D.A. CA Certified Agriculture Crop Loss Adjustor. She has a BA in Environmental Studies & Planning from Sonoma State with emphasis on agricultural sustainability.
Allan Buckmann, a trained Weather Observer (US Air Force), ecologist, and wildlife biologist, recently retired after 38 years with the CA Department of Fish & Game. He is also President of Microbe Tech, Inc.
Peterson and Buckmann recently addressed the 60th Annual United Nations’ Conference on Climate Change (Sept. 5-7, 2007). Their presentation will reprise, in large part, the information presented at the United Nations.
Dane Wigington, a Shasta County resident, researches solar power, renewable energy and forest health.

Just a reminder that the Art Education Club yard sale and BBQ will be today from 10am - 2pm in the Free Speech Area.

Items for sale will include skeleton dolls, Mexican decorations, a 3/4 size skeleton and paper mache fruits & vegetables, just in time for your Halloween decorating. AS Late Night Event - Moster Movie Bash
As Late Night Chico will be showing a Monster Movie Bash Double Feature movie night, Thurs. Oct. 25, 2007 inside the BMU Common Grounds.
Showing will begin at 8pm with Army of Darkness, a comedy horror / adventure film, and at 10pm Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Come enjoy either movie with the free admission, refreshments and a comfortable atmosphere as you wind down before your weekend.

Annual Caregiver Conference
Please join PASSAGES Mountain Caregiver Resource Center for their annual Caregiver Conference in Red Bluff. The theme this year is “Caregiver Comfort.”
We will “warm up” with keynote speaker LeAnn Thieman; author of “Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul,” nationally acclaimed motivational speaker, author and nurse. Next we will “chill out” with Beverly Bender, humorist, educator, certified leader and laughter yoga trainer. We will end our day “mellowing out” with one of our own MCRC family consultants, Lillian Arnold, who will demonstrate “Sign Chi Do”, described as the “Moving Language.” It is said to harmonize sign language with movement.
This important conference is offered by MOUNTAIN CAREGIVER RESOURCE CENTER, a program of PASSAGES. There is no charge for this day of fun and relaxation. Lunch is included.
So mark your calendars for Thurs., Nov. 8, 2007 from 9am -3:30pm at the Red Bluff Community Center, 1500 South Jackson, Red Bluff, CA.

Any CSU, Chico employee who accrues sick leave or vacation leave credits may donate leave credits to other eligible employees on the CSU, Chico campus, regardless of bargaining unit affiliation. Associated Student employees and CSU, Chico University Research Foundation employees are not eligible to donate leave credits to CSU, Chico employees.
If you wish to donate leave credits, you will need to sign the catastrophic leave donation list - which is maintained at the Payroll/Benefits Customer Service Counter (Kendall 222). BECAUSE YOUR SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED, YOUR DONATIONS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED OVER THE PHONE OR VIA E-MAIL.
Per Catastrophic Leave Program guidelines, only the Disability Programs Office or a union representative may solicit for Catastrophic Leave donations; solicitation by any other party is prohibited.

Protecting Yourself and the Campus from Cyber Threats
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
Presenters: Brooke Banks and Jeff Williams
This workshop provides a basic overview of information security, best practices to keep your data safe and your responsibilities. Participants will gain a practical understanding of cyber security threats, ways to avoid them and steps to take if it happens. In this workshop, participants will:
recognize cyber security threats
explore ways to protect your information
review the university’s Acceptable Use Policy
understand the levels of data protection
learn how to recognize security risks; learn how to respond or report a security incident
