The 20th Annual Pumpkin Drop - Noon on Halloween
Get in the Halloween spirit as the Society of Physics Students at California State University, Chico presents the 20th Annual Pumpkin Drop at high noon on Wednesday, Oct. 31, on the south side of Butte Hall.
Legend has it that Galileo Galilei demonstrated his Law of Falling Bodies by climbing to the top of the Tower of Pisa so that he could drop a large ball and a small ball at the same time. Both balls hit the ground together, and his law was demonstrated.
Physics students will re-enact this great moment in the history of science, using pumpkins. The character of Albert Einstein will be the master of ceremonies while Aristotle, Galileo and Sir Isaac Newton will all be there to explain their theories of gravity.

Former “Lost Boy of Sudan” Will Address Human Rights Abuses in South Sudan and Darfur
Deng Chol, executive director of the Lost Boys’ and Lost Girls’ National Nonprofit Organization, will speak on “Human Rights Abuses and Mass Murder by the Khartoum Government in the South of Sudan and in Darfur” on Monday, Nov. 5. The presentation, to be held at 8 p.m. in Holt 170 on the California State University, Chico campus, is free and open to the public.
Chol was born in 1977 in Duk Payuel in South Sudan, the son of a chief of a section of Dinka Bor, Nyarweng. He was forced to flee his home in southern Sudan as a young child. He escaped with other children on a two-month, 1,000-mile trek to a refugee camp in Ethiopia. He lived many years in camps in both Ethiopia and Kenya.
He is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, a name given by aid organizations to refer to the more than 20,000 boys who were displaced and/or orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War. In 2001, about 3,800 boys were brought to the United States. Chol was one of these boys.

CAPE Forum: Altruism: For Saints, Suckers or Everyone? TODAY
We are often surprised and appreciative when we observe an act of selfless good will. But are these acts truly selfless, or are they really motivated by self-interest? Do the charitable give simply to make themselves feel better, or are they genuinely concerned with the well-being of others? Is human nature essentially selfish? Evolution might favor selfishness since it would seem to promote one’s reproductive interests. But then altruistic acts should be rarer than they are. Even if we are inclined by nature to egoism, shouldn’t we at least sometimes act for the benefit of others? Should we always do so? Or never? Come hear what contemporary biological, psychological and moral theories tell us about the nature of altruism.

Conversations on Diversity: Hidden in Plain Sight, Oct. 24
Facilitated by Sandy Parsons, Director of Disability Support Services
How many students with disabilities do you see on campus? Only a fraction of the true number: 1 in 11 students has a documented disability. Students with hidden disabilities—including mental illness, brain injuries, asthma, cancer, AIDS—must choose whether or not to identify themselves. Disclosure allows them to receive accommodations that can be essential to their academic success, but it also opens them up to discrimination and prejudice. Yet when they decide not to disclose, they run the risk of being dismissed as unmotivated, lazy, or just not very bright. Come hear what you don’t see: Chico students with disabilities telling their own stories.
Join us Wed., Oct 24, at noon in BMU 304; contact Tray Robinson at 4764 for additional information.
