CSU, Chico Awarded $944,415 Grant for Improving Teacher Quality Grant
The Mathematics Project at California State University, Chico has won funding for a new professional development project to improve math instruction in kindergarten through second grade. The California Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC) awarded a four-year grant of $944,415 to the University in a statewide competition.
The project, titled “Mathematics in the Early Grades,” is a partnership between the University, the Red Bluff Union Elementary School District, Orland Unified School District, Cascade Union School District, and the Tehama County Department of Education.
Jorgen Bergland, director of the Mathematics Project at CSU, Chico, will direct the project, and Lynne Bercaw, Department of Education, will be the co-director. The leadership team includes Sharon Ross and Matt Ciancetta from the Department of Mathematics, Lisa Sandberg from the Tehama County Department of Education and JoAnn Stephens from Orland Unified School District. Rachelle Hackett from the University of the Pacific will provide outside research and evaluation.

Ethics Forum Will Address Global Public Health
The Center for Applied and Professional Ethics (CAPE) at California State University, Chico will sponsor “If We Fail to Act: Ethical Challenges to 21st Century Global Public Health” on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in PAC 134.
This second forum in CAPE’s fall series on health will address questions of public health in developing countries. “AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis will kill tens of millions of people over the next 20 years. Efforts to combat them are inadequately funded and coordinated,” said Marcel Daguerre, director of CAPE.
“The forum will explore such questions as What are the barriers to establishing effective health care systems? What does it mean to act in relation to these problems? What are the reasons to do so and what may be the consequences if we do not?”

"Healing Through Art" Seminar
Have you used creativity to help you feel better? Want to explore ways to heal through doing art? Healthcare professionals in every imaginable healthcare setting are discovering that expressive arts have a profound effect on patients. In this presentation, Rebecca Senoglu, Cancer Support Program Coordinator at Enloe Cancer Center, will discuss the history of healing through art, why it works, and how expressive arts are being used at Enloe Cancer Center to help patients and families feel better. Everyone welcome, those touched by cancer (patients, survivors, family members) particularly encouraged to attend.

Basic & Intermediate Web Design Workshops - Spring 2008
The Communication Design Department is offering 3-day classes in Basic and Intermediate Web Design. You will gain skills on the latest techniques in Web design during these 3-day classes and receive one unit of credit.
On March 7-9 Jon Knolle, Owner of Learning Change, will teach you the fundamentals of Web Design in CDES 212 (6375), Basic Web Design. A few weeks later you can enhance your skills in a follow-up session on April 4-6 in CDES 312 (6386), Intermediate Web Design. Each class is one unit for credit only. Keep up with the newest in Web design applications taught by the North State’s leading professional! This is a rare opportunity. Space is limited so sign up soon.

University's Needy Children Program -Time to Submit Your Request

Overseas Educational Advisers to visit CSU, Chico
Between Oct. 31 and Nov. 7 a group of four EducationUSA advisers will be visiting the Chico area. EducationUSA advisers posted at U.S. Embassy Public Affairs offices, Fulbright Commissions, local universities and bi-national centers help foreign students learn about higher education in the United States. Diana Parks, coordinator of the program for CSU, Chico, reports that advisers will visit the CSU, Chico American Language and Culture Institute and Butte Community College in addition to CSU, Chico while in the area.
The campus visit program will include discussions on the admissions process with campus officials, meet faculty, students and staff, and attend classes to gain a picture of current trends and practices on American campuses. The advisers will also serve as resources to the institutions they visit, by reporting on their home country educational systems, policies and academic training needs and responding to American questions.

For 12 years, This American Life has been lauded for reinventing the way people listen to radio. “We do these stories that are like movies for radio,” says Ira Glass, the show’s venerable writer, producer, and on-air host. Locally broadcast on KCHO/KFPR radio, This American Life airs on 500 NPR stations with 1.7 million listeners weekly. A television version of This American Life featuring Glass premiered on Showtime earlier this year. This event is co-sponsored by KCHO/KFPR and Cottonparty.

Survivor Series: Mixed Drinks, Mixed Emotions

Cross Cultural Center Hosts Open House, Leadership Conference
The campus community is invited to stop by the Cross Cultural Center’s Open House on Tues., Nov. 6, from 5pm - 6:30pm in University Center 101. The open house will include food, information on the program, and a tour of the center.
The program will also hold a free leadership conference the following Tues., Nov. 13, from 5pm - 9pm. The mixer will begin in Selvester’s, followed by three concurrent workshops in Holt and a debriefing at the Cross-Cultural Center. Men of Honor Fall Ball Tickets Still Available
Men of Honor presents the 2007 Fall Ball on Thurs., Nov. 8 from 7pm -1am.
This year’s theme is “Masquerade of Mystery” and takes place at the Chico Event Center (above the Brickworks). This “suit & tie” event includes music, dinner, dancing, contests including “best dressed” and “best mask.” The entire campus community is invited to attend.
Men of Honor is also selling raffle tickets for an Xbox 360. Raffle tickets are available through Robert Williams or other Men of Honor members, and the drawing will be held at the Fall Ball. The winner need not be present at the event. Tickets are $1 a piece or less, depending on number of tickets purchased.
Advance event tickets are on sale until Nov. 3 for $25 Single/$45 Couple. Event tickets may be purchased at the Student Activities Office in BMU 213, or by contacting Robert Williams (323) 841-4502. Men of Honor will also hold ticket sales on campus until the event.

Rebuild New Orleans Fundraiser Nov. 7
Support the College of ECC Rebuild New Orleans Project and have a night without cooking. Students are heading back to New Orleans for a third time in January with 117 volunteers to help rebuild the homes and lives torn apart by the devastating Hurricane Katrina. The project’s motto has been “Working together to help rebuild the lives of fellow Americans”.

Seminar by Dr. Tom Griggs for the Chico Herbarium
Dr. Thomas Griggs, a key restoration ecologist in the Northstate and principal member of River Partners, will be speaking at the annual “Friends of the Herbarium” meetings. Dr. Griggs’ talk will complement the sustainability conference with the topic,
“Herbaria and other Natural History Collections: Their Importance in Conservation and Sustainability”

The herbarium in the CSU, Chico Biology Department has been for several decades an essential tool for both students and natural resource managers in Northern California. Today, it additionally provides a valuable record of the vegetation of northern California, both historically, currently, and in the future as the vegetation responds to human modifications to climate and hydrology, and the invasion by non-native plants. This presentation will describe the array of current uses of the Herbarium. A vision for the future role of the Herbarium at the University will also be presented.

The Office of Experiential Education and the Human Resource Management Association are co-sponsoring an Internship Fair on Wed., Nov. 7, 2007 from 10am to 2pm in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium.
