Humanities and Fine Arts Offers Trip to Spain and Portugal
The College of Humanities and Fine Arts, California State University, Chico, is hosting a tour to Spain and Portugal June 1-12, 2008. The tour will include three nights in Lisbon, one in Cordoba, two in Granada, one in Toledo and three in Madrid.
The faculty-in-residence is history professor Stephen E. Lewis, who earned his PhD from UC San Diego. His specialty is Latin American history, and he has done extensive research on Mexico. His association with Spain spans 20 years, first as a student and most recently as a visiting professor. Students will be able to get 1-2 units of credit for course work related to the trip, if they choose.
Professor Lewis will be hosting a Humanities Center program on Thursday, Dec. 6 in Trinity 100 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. He will present information about Spain and Portugal, especially the places the tour will be visiting.

The Orion Wins First National Award For Online Edition
The Orion, California State University, Chico’s student newspaper, has won its first Online Pacemaker award for the Web-based edition of its publication.
The Pacemaker awards are among the most prestigious for college journalism and are given annually by Associated Collegiate Press, the oldest and largest national organization for college journalists.
Thirteen other colleges and universities across the country also received the honor, including student newspapers from University of Illinois and University of Kansas, and three from the CSU: The Collegian from Fresno State, the Mustang Daily from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and the Golden Gate [X]Press from San Francisco State.

Organic and Grass-Fed Ground Beef Sales: College of Agriculture
The College of Agriculture is now providing Organic Grass-fed, Grass-fed and a Grain-fed variety of ground beef to the campus community. The beef was raised locally at the CSU, Chico Agriculture Teaching and Resource Center by CSU, Chico agriculture students. Ross Szabo to Speak at Survivor Series in Laxson Tonight

Bev Ford is Waltzing Out the Door into Retirement
We hope you can join us in honoring and celebrating Bev Ford’s 24 years of service on campus. Bev began her career in 1983 in a support staff position. Soon thereafter, she co-authored a grant to develop and implement the Employee Assistance Program for the University and the program has now been in existence for 23 years. In addition, Bev also developed and implemented the Supervisory Training Program within her department that has been a wonderful opportunity for many, many staff to expand their supervisory skills.
Bev’s Retirement Reception is scheduled for Thurs., Nov. 15, 2007 at 9am in Trinity Hall 100. A short program will begin at 9:30am.

Cross Cultural Center Presents Open House Today
The Cross Cultural Center staff welcomes the campus community to an Open House today, Nov. 6, in University Center 101. The center opens at 9am, and students, faculty and staff are welcome to stop in any time.
The highlight of the day is a welcome reception at 5pm. The reception includes food, information on the center and its resources, introduction of staff and interns, and a preview of upcoming events. North State Symphony to Perform Mahler's Monumental Second Symphony, Nov. 17 & 18
The North State Symphony, joined by two guest soloists and choral ensembles from Chico and Redding, will perform Gustav Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony.
Performances take place Sat., Nov. 17 at 7:30pm at Redding’s Cascade Theatre and Sun., Nov. 18 at 2pm at Chico’s Laxson Auditorium.
Mahler was inspired by Beethoven in writing his Second Symphony. Like Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mahler’s Second has a large chorus, which sings with the orchestra in the work’s finale.
Joining the North State Symphony will be the CSU, Chico University Choir, conducted by David Scholz, the Shasta College Community Chorale, and the Simpson University Chorus. Also performing are two professional vocal soloists, Elizabeth Madsen Bradford and Joyce Parry Moore.

Get Your Tickets Now for Intimate Performance of Carmen
Chico State’s Opera Workshop presents an English-language, condensed version of Bizet’s opera Carmen.
Performances take place at 7:30p.m. Tues., Nov. 13 and Wed., Nov. 14 in the Performing Arts Center’s intimate Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall.
Opera Workshop’s orchestra and cast of thirty singers will bring to life the opera’s familiar tunes, including the “Toréador Song” and “Habanera.” The production will feature costumes, dramatic lighting, and simple sets and props. The opera will shine a spotlight on talented CSU, Chico voice students and also students from Pleasant Valley High School’s choir. Cast in the main roles are Molly Mahoney (Carmen) and Eric Seiler (Don Jose).
“Carmen” has bewitched audiences since its premiere in Paris in 1875 with its colorful, passionate score pulsating with Gypsy sensual rhythms, its shocking denouncements, and its sexuality powerful title character, opera’s ultimate femme fatale.

There is no one answer to these questions, but there are good practice guidelines. This session briefly summarizes the strengths and challenges of blended and mixed-mode learning, and will showcase an eclectic mix of examples of effective and innovative practice from the University of Central Florida and the University of Georgia.
