College Math Day Introduces 11th and 12th Graders to College Environment
Sixty 11th and 12th graders from 10 area high schools will participate in College Math Day on Friday, Nov. 16 at California State University, Chico. The day, sponsored by the Center for Math and Science, is designed to interest students in studying math at the university level.
The students will attend math presentations in the morning on problem solving, statistics, number theory or some other facet of college mathematics. In the afternoon, they will compete in a problem-solving event.
The day is designed not only for the top students, but for all students interested in math, especially those who may need a nudge to see themselves as math students in college. The leaders encourage teachers to look to under-represented groups for student attendee candidates.

First Chico Greenies Awarded at Sustainability III Conference
This Way to Sustainability III welcomed more than 1,100 participants to the Bell Memorial Union at California State University, Chico Nov. 1 through Nov. 4. At least 200 of the attendants were students from other universities.
One of the highlights of the conference and of particular significance to the Chico community was the conference’s first presentation of the “Greenies.” More than 400 people attended a Friday night banquet where the awards were given to the local individual, nonprofit organization and business that have done the most for sustainability this year.
The individual award went to Ken Grossman, owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., whose mission includes “being a good corporate citizen and environmental steward.” While Sierra Nevada has grown to more than 300 employees with state-of-the-art brewing and processing equipment, founder/owner Grossman continues to operate the brewery in an ecologically clean and efficient manner.

CAPE Forum on Global Public Health, Nov. 7
“If We Fail to Act”: Ethical Challenges to 21st Century Global Public Health
Wed., Nov. 7, PAC 134, 7:30pm
By some estimates, tens of millions of people worldwide will die from AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis over the next twenty years. These deaths are preventable using existing medical treatments. But efforts to combat these diseases are inadequately funded and coordinated. Furthermore, focusing only on these high-profile killers does little to improve other aspects of public health in developing countries. What are the causes of ill health and early death in such populations, and how can these be addressed? What are the barriers to establishing effective health care systems and the infrastructure to support them? What can be done to minimize the loss of lives? What does it mean to act in relation to these problems, what are the reasons to do so, and what may be the consequences if we do not?

The Format Live on November 15
AS Presents is proud to present a performance by the up and coming band The Format with Surrogate, Brighten, and special guests in the BMU Auditorium on Thurs., Nov. 15, 2007. Doors open at 7pm. The performance will begin at 8pm.
These Arizona rockers have been on the music scene for the past five years, with most members barely old enough to buy a drink at the bars they have played in. Critics have praised their last two albums, quoting it to be full of, “diverse flavors, with emphasis on the singer/songwriting nucleus that mixes a knack for beatlesque melodies with ‘80’s styled layerings.” With support from the talented Chico local bands Surrogate and Brighten, this acoustic performance will surely not be one to miss.
Tickets are available at the University Box Office on 2nd and Normal. Students with CSU, Chico ID are $12, General Admission is $15. General admission patrons without CSU, Chico ID must be 18 and over. Ticket prices will increase $3 at the door.
