Benefit Concert for Mike Zhang, Nov. 15

You are invited to attend a benefit concert for former CSU, Chico Student, exceptional vocalist, beloved colleague, and scholarship/MA recipient Mike Zhang who has been in critical condition in a hospital in China for the last 7 weeks with Pancreatitis and other complications.

Contributions are urgently needed to ensure his continued care. If funds run out, the hospital will discontinue treatment according to hospital policy and Mike most likely would not survive.

A wonderful evening of music is being presented by CSU, Chico music faculty, students, and alumni as well as Mike’s former voice students. Featured performers include vocalists Dr. Ying Yeh, Vincent Chambers, Daun Hayes, Diane O’Sullivan, Tamara Allspaugh, Christina Wong, and Mary Jane Morris. Organist Dr. David Rothe and guitarist Chris Wenger will perform solos, and Dr. Robert Bowman and Sandy Wright will accompany the singers. Works by Bach, Verdi, Puccini, Menotti, Villa Lobos, Gounod, Leoncavallo, John Duke, and a new set of songs by CSU, Chico Composer, Dr. Russell Burnham, will be featured.

Gwen Curatilo, former director of the CSU, Chico Opera Workshop, will be the MC for the concert. She and Christina Wong have organized the event that will be held in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church, 5th and Flume Streets in Chico. The concert will begin at 7:30pm.

Please bring your friends and generous donations to support this wonderful artist and human being. And for all of you who have already donated (or who will), Mike’s family and friends give great thanks for your generosity and compassion.

If you are unable to attend and would like to make a donation, please send your contribution to
Mike’s former church: Grace Brethren Church, c/o Benevolent Fund for Michael Zhang, 355 Panama Ave, Chico, Ca 95973 (342-8642) or Tri-Counties Bank In Care of the Michael (Mike) Zhang Medical Fund, 2171 Pillsbury Rd., Chico, CA 95926 (898-0470)

A Celtic Christmas is a remembrance of a way of life that is no longer with us, where ordinary Irish men and women celebrated the holidays with jigs, reels and hornpipes, the rafters rang with the traditional music of the fiddle, bodhran, tin whistle, and uilleann pipes, and stories were told around the roaring fire. Perfect holiday entertainment for the whole family.

Conversations on Diversity: There Are None So Blind as Those Who Refuse to See, Dec. 5

Facilitated by Dr. Sherrow Pinder, Professor of Political Science

People often claim they just don’t notice a person’s race and sex. Is this really possible? Is it even desirable? In what ways does claiming such blindness protect existing biases and beliefs about race, sex, gender, and sexuality? This Conversation on Diversity will explore the consequences of claiming we don’t see identities as well as include discussion about why people might take such a stance. Bring your lunch and join us.

Join us Wed., Dec. 5, at noon in BMU 210; contact Tray Robinson at 4764 for additional information.

A Profile of Youth in the United Arab Emirates by Dr. Chris Coughlin, Child Development

All societies face similar issues in assisting youth make the transition from adolescent to adulthood. Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), however, appear to be confronting a number of particular issues. This arises partly from the effects of globalization as well as rapid economic development. The present research was based on a comprehensive structured questionnaire to 6,672 Arab youth in their last three years of secondary school in the U.A.E. The survey was used to determine the main challenges to successful futures for youth as well as ways of assisting youth during their school years. This presentation will focus on highlighting findings from this study.

Tues., Nov. 13, 5pm - 5:50pm in PAC 134
