Black History Month Features Varied Events
A wide array of educational and entertainment events highlight Black History Month at California State University, Chico.
One of the featured activities includes a special showing Feb. 17 in the BMU Auditorium of the film “Stompin,” whose producer and writer is CSU, Chico alum Deion Reid. Well-known actor Sinbad, a member of the cast, is scheduled to be at the showing.
Black History Month will also feature an event educating campus community members about HIV/AIDS. Butte County Public Health Department is a co-sponsor.

Ride the B-Line for Free
Tired of hunting for a parking spot? Looking for a new way to reduce your carbon emissions? Your Wildcat ID Card is the answer. All CSU, Chico faculty, staff, and students can use their Wildcat ID Card to ride the B-line bus for FREE. Bus schedules and maps are available on the B-Line Web site or at the Information Center on the first floor of the BMU. 2007 Staff Safety Award Nominations
Each year the University issues a Staff Safety Award to a staff member who goes beyond their regular duties in promoting safety and making the work place safer. This could be a single act of safety or a continuous contribution to a safe work environment. The award recipient is presented with a plaque/certificate and a monetary award. Recipients may also be eligible to compete for the State Governor’s Employee Safety Award. Last year Lau Ackerman received the CSU, Chico Staff Safety Award.
If you would like to nominate a co-worker/staff member, the “Safety Award Nomination Form and Guidelines” are available on the Environmental Health & Safety web site.
Please contact the Department of Environmental Health and Safety at extension 5126, if you would like a nomination form e-mailed, faxed, or mailed to you. Feel free to contact the EH&S office for additional information. You may nominate more than one co-worker/staff member. The deadline for submitals is Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.

Join a Support Group at the Psychological Counseling Center
At the Psychological Counseling Center, we offer a variety of support groups each semester. All of our groups are led by experienced staff counselors. These groups are provided as a free service to regularly enrolled students at CSU, Chico.
Newer groups offered this semester: “How to Manage a Stressful Life,” “Women’s Relationship Group,” and “GLBTQ: a support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students”. Visit our web site to view all the groups being offered.

Active Minds Meeting, Feb. 5
Active Minds is a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy organization on the college campus. The group is designed to utilize peer outreach to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues and symptoms of mental illness, provide information about available resources, encourage students to seek help as help is needed, and to serve as liaison between students and the mental health community.
Please support us by encouraging students to join our club. Our next meeting will be Tues., Feb. 5 at 5pm in BMU 312. Help us gain awareness of an issue that touches all our lives.

CSU, Chico Warehouse Live Auction, Feb. 19
The Office of Property Management at California State University, Chico, would like to invite you to view our surplus property. Items include desks, filing cabinets, bookshelves, electronics, chairs, tables, and much much more.
These items are cash only and payable at the time of purchase. Viewing hours are 11am to 12 noon, with the auction beginning at 12:10pm to 3pm on Tues., Feb. 19 located at the Warehouse, 810 Oak Street, Suite 100, Chico.
At the time of purchase, you must provide a vehicle to take all items selected by 3pm. Items will not be held for later removal.

3rd Floor Gallery Reception, Feb. 6
The Third Floor Gallery presents “Channeled Visions”, an exhibition of ceramic art and wood cut pieces by CSU, Chico art student Sterling Silver, Jan. 25 through Feb. 18. Sterling’s work speaks to our collective fascination with electronic media and the often dark results of the flickering glow of the TV screen.
A reception, complete with refreshments and a chance to meet and talk with the artist, will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 5pm to 7pm in the gallery.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Feb. 7
In recognition of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, CSU, Chico in Collaboration with the Butte County Public Health Department will be offering FREE ORAL TESTING (results in 20 minutes) at the Butte County Health Medical Mobile Unit which will be located between Glenn Hall and Siskiyou Hall. This event will take place on Thurs., Feb. 7 at 11am - 4pm, ALL ARE WELCOMED. Students who show proof of testing on Feb. 7 will be entered to win an iPod shuffle (donated by Chevron) and other cool prizes.

Humanities Center Hosts Anthony Grafton on Feb. 11-12

CSU, Chico’s Presidential Scholar and Humanities Center’s Book Theme Guest On-stage Interview: “Scholars, Students, and Books: From the Middle Ages to Today.” Hosted by Lawrence Bryant, Department of History. 7:30pm, Performing Arts Center 135 (Wismer Theatre).
Tues., Feb. 12
Lecture “Explosions in the Scholars’ Garden: The Forgotten Tradition of Libraries in the Western Tradition.” Introduced by Robert O’ Brien, Department of English. 7:30pm, Ayres 106 (Little Theatre). Reception to follow, Trinity 100 (Humanities Center Gallery).
Anthony Grafton, the Henry Putnam University Professor of History at Princeton University, is one of the most respected historians of early modern Europe in the world. He has published widely on the history of libraries, books, and scholarship. Grafton has been the recipient of many awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the prestigious international Balzan Prize for the History of Humanities, the Mellon Foundation’s Distinguished Achievement Award. Grafton is a public intellectual, whose fluid, witty writing makes his deep erudition accessible beyond the academy. He is a contributor to The New York Review of Books, The American Scholar and The New Yorker, and he enjoys the reputation of being an excellent public speaker.

Thursday Pizza to Support American Cancer Society
The University Wildcat Relay For Life team invites the campus community to Round Table Pizza in the Almond Orchard, this Thurs., Feb. 7 from 5pm - 9pm to support their fundraising efforts. For every purchase with special coupon (excluding alcohol), 20 percent will go to the American Cancer Society. Coupons are available at Round Table. The team will also be selling home-baked sweets at the event.
The team will continue with various fund raisers until the relay at Pleasant Valley High School, April 26 and 27. For more information on the fundraisers contact Peggy Armocido, or to join the team contact Kathy Favor.

Wildcat Athletics this Week
The CSU, Chico Baseball team hosts Western Oregon University for a four-game series this weekend at Nettleton Stadium. Game times are Friday 6pm, Sat. 11am doubleheader, and Sunday 11am. Games can be heard on SportsFan 101.7 FM.
The Basketball teams are on the road this weekend with games at San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay. Games can be heard on KPAY 1290 AM.
Softball is also on the road with a four-game series at UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday.

Comedic all-male ballet troupe, Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo perform TONIGHT at Laxson
Enjoy the best of comedic ballet with world-renowned all male ballet troupe: Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo, brought to you by Chico Performances, at 7:30pm tonight in Laxson Auditorium.
Dancing the fine line between high art and high camp, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has delighted audiences around the world by parodying classical works from Swan Lake to Giselle and the choreography of Isadora Duncan, George Balanchine and Martha Graham.
The Trockaderos, an all male company of professional ballet dancers, offer buoyant and hilarious evenings for young and old by combining a loving knowledge of dance with a wicked comedic sensibility.
