Environmentalist and Emmy Award Winner David Chameides Will Speak on ‘Chasing Sustainability’

The Institute for Sustainable Development and the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics, California State University, Chico are co-hosting David Chameides, an award-winning director and cameraman, as well as a freelance journalist who writes about alternative fuels. He will speak on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Performing Arts Center 134 at 7:30 p.m.

Chameides will address questions such as What is the rate of fossil fuel consumption in the United States compared with the rest of the world? How much longer can we continue to use energy at the rate at which we are accustomed? If not much longer, what are our prospects for developing alternative, nonpolluting sources? How do regular people in Chico, California, go about doing this?

“David Chameides presents an argument in favor of practicing conservation in the broader ambition of living a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Professor Andrew Flescher, who is helping coordinate Chameides’ visit. “His talk begins with a now-famous Caltech study from 1999 in which scientists determined how much energy the inhabitants of the Earth used compared to how much we will eventually need, paying particular attention to how petroleum is consumed. Chameides makes the case that we are now at ‘peak oil’ and sets up a discussion of conservation and alternative energy.”

California State University, Chico, College of Agriculture announces plans to host the 2008 Organic Dairy Conference at the University’s Agriculture Teaching and Research Center on March 25-26, 2008. The two-day event will feature nationally recognized speakers on holistic herd health with an emphasis on milk quality and organic methods to maximize pasture productivity and minimize grain inputs. Speakers include Dr. Paul Dettloff, holistic dairy practitioner, LaFarge, WI; Dr. Tina Johnson, certified veterinary acupuncturist, Newburg Veterinary Hospital, Newburg, OR; Gary Zimmer, agronomist and president and founder of Mid-Western Bio-Ag Services; and Jerry Brunetti, animal nutritionist and founder of Agri-Dynamics, Inc.

History Professor Ken Rose at Barnes and Noble, Feb. 16

CSU, Chico History Professor Ken Rose talks, takes questions, and signs his newest book at Barnes and Noble in Chico on Feb. 16 at 3pm.

In Myth and the Greatest Generation: A Social History of Americans in World War II, Kenneth Rose has written a book that questions some of the main assumptions of Tom Brokaw’s book The Greatest Generation. Brokaw’s book is based on individual stories of men and women who came of age during the Great Depression and lived through World War II. What Rose brings is a historian’s research method to the subject, and with economic, demographic, and historical data, he suggests that individual testimonies, no matter how powerful, don’t tell the whole story.
