Water and Land Use Expert to Speak on Low Impact Development

Timothy Lawrence, manager and co-director of the Center for Water and Land Use at University of California, Davis Extension, will discuss low-impact development Tuesday, March 4, 5:15 p.m., Langdon 105 at California State University, Chico. The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program in the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management is sponsoring his visit.

Lawrence holds a PhD from Ohio State University in environmental science. Lawrence’s dissertation research focused on the human dimensions of environmental policy by studying the response of local officials to environmental regulations and importance of multi-jurisdictional collaboration. For the last 12 years, he has focused on the relationship between land use and water quality and the means of minimizing the impact of development on water quality and aquatic habitats.

Prior to moving back to California, Lawrence spent 16 years with Ohio State University Extension, where he was the founding director of the award-winning campus ecology program CampUShed and the Ohio NEMO program. NEMO (Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials) is a confederation of 32 educational programs in 31 states dedicated to protecting natural resources through better land use and land use planning.

Don't Miss It - "The Bacchae" Staged Wed.-Sun. in Harlen Adams Theatre

Theatre: The Bacchae
Wed., March 5 - Sat., March 8 at 7:30pm
Sun., March 9 at 2pm
Harlen Adams Theatre

It is never wise to anger a god!

This classic tale of vengeance was first presented in the 5th century B.C. and has remained a vigorous and vital example of the human spirit. Euripides’ “The Bacchae” centers on the divide between the rational and the religious; control and excess. Few plays match its popularity, and this complex portrayal of humanity promises an evening of compelling performance blending dance and drama into a whirlwind of action and passion. Katie Whitlock, Department of Theatre faculty member, directs.

Dealing with the Difficult Student or the Student in Distress

Presenter: Deborah Genito and Stephanie Chervinko, Psychological Counseling & Wellness & Wellness Center

Anyone working in an office where contact with students is a regular part of the job will occasionally be faced with different types of students who are either reacting to significant stress or with those who have adopted a communication style that is very difficult and upsetting.

This workshop will look at strategies for both dealing with the student and also for dealing with your own reactions to these students. While there is often no easy answer to these situations, the shared experience of the group is very helpful. Participants will have an opportunity to share (if they wish) difficult experiences and what strategies they have tried. This workshop will help participants understand:

· helping, yet maintaining appropriate boundaries
· the depressed student
· the student in poor reality contact
· the angry or aggressive student
· the anxious student
· the whiny/manipulative student
· the suspicious student

Date: March 6, 2008
Time: 2pm - 4pm
Location: MLIB Studio A
Instructors: Deborah Genito and Stephanie Chervinko
