Humanities Center Gallery
Trinity Hall
M-F 8-5 (closed March 31)
Wed., March 5, Reception, 5pm - 7pm
Department of Art faculty Nanette Wylde is a conceptual artist who heads the Digital Media/Electronic Arts program at CSU, Chico. Kent Manske is a conceptual printmaker and faculty in art at Foothill College. They write, “PreNeo Press synthesizes life, art, and design to create individual and collaborative cultural artifacts and experiences. Projects take form as artists’ books, electronic and interactive works, democratic multiples, and fine art prints.”
Graphic Design major Jeremy Golden pairs up with IMC designer Chris Ficken to explore the lecture-hall experience by way of distracted minds: lecture notes that emerge as drawings and a series of fifty-year-old, birch-wood desktops recovered from Ayres 120 during a remodel in 2000. They write, “This show explores the wanderings of the right brain as it subverts the left brain’s attempts at productivity. We find pleasure in creative expression and freedom from the analytical mind.”

Lecture: Author and Environmentalist David Quammen, March 11
As part of the On the Creek Lecture Series, David Quammen will give a free lecture 7:30pm, March 11, in Laxson Auditorium.
Charles Darwin took 20 years to publish his theory of evolution; he produced On the Origin of Species only on learning that he was about to be scooped. Quammen’s most recent book, The Reluctant Mr. Darwin, traces the two-decade period between Charles Darwin’s original idea of natural selection and the publication of On the Origin of Species. Quammen illuminates the long process of research, thinking, and personal anguish that led from Darwin’s brief visit to the Galapagos Islands to the eventual unveiling of his theory. Quammen will be speaking about the life of Darwin as well as his work.
This performance is FREE but a ticket is required for admission. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, (530) 898-6333, 2nd and Normal Streets.

CELT Workshop: Magically Improve Student Study Skills Without Using Magic
Presenter: Marc Siegall, Ph.D., Department of Management
Workshop date/time: March 27, 2008, 3pm - 4:30pm; Butte 103
Do you worry that your quizzes, exams, etc. measure your students’ ability to “cram,” rather than their ability to learn? Students often do not know HOW to study well. Additionally, even if they succeeded in learning the material, overwhelming stress during exams can prevent them from demonstrating this success.
In this workshop, the presenter will share some of the “biggest bang for the buck” techniques he developed while working with students. Discussion will center on a short publication he wrote summarizing these techniques, with the goal of more widely dispersing this information to colleagues for use in their own courses. The piece is written in a relaxed, conversational tone, making it a useful reference you can provide students to help themselves improve their study skills. As part of the workshop, you will be invited to share your favorite techniques for helping students learn how to learn.
You can register for this and other CELT workshops online. After entering your user name and Portal password, click on the Course Catalogue menu, click on the section entitled Professional Development, and then click the CELT link where you can view the workshop titles and enroll.
