MESA Competitions Teach Middle and High School Students About Engineering, Science and Math
More than 100 students from six local middle and senior high schools will drop eggs from tall buildings, race miniature cars built from mousetraps, launch projectiles from trebuchet devices, crush bridge models made from balsawood and compete in other hands-on activities on Saturday, March 8, at California State University, Chico.
These activities are part of a full day of engineering, science and math competitions sponsored by the pre-college division of the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program. The MESA Day activities will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at different locations on the west side of the CSU, Chico campus.
The MESA Schools Program (MSP) is a statewide academic preparation and enrichment initiative that assists educationally disadvantaged students in achieving academically, developing an early interest in math and science-based careers, and preparing for competitive entry into college.

Social Work Awareness Month Food Drive
The School of Social Work is joining the Chico Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers in a food drive to commemorate March as National Social Work Awareness Month. This year’s theme is Building on Strengths.
We will be at the Chico Farmers Market every Saturday in March with information about social work as well as conducting a food drive for the Catholic Ladies Relief Society’s food locker. The Catholic Ladies Relief Society helps many Butte County families with food, housing assistance and utility assistance. After this winter their food lockers are more depleted than they’ve ever been. So come out and donate non-perishable food items or money to help us Build on the Strengths of this fine organization.

The exhibition “Marcel Duchamp: About the Large Glass and Related Works” will be held at The Turner/Chico Museum, March 12 to April 27, 2008.
The centerpiece of this exhibition will be a replica of Duchamp’s major work The Large Glass that was produced in 1990 by Chico students under the direction of CSU, Chico Art Professor James McManus. Related works include reconstructions of Fountain, Three Standard Stoppages, and Bicycle. Joining these objects are important works by Marcel Duchamp, borrowed for this exhibition, including his Notes in a Green Box and A l’infinitif.
On March 12, Dr. Linda Dalrymple Henderson, Distinguished Professor of Art History at the University of Texas at Austin and author of several books, including the definitive work on Marcel Duchamp’s Large Glass, will be the guest speaker in the Humanities Center (Trinity Hall 100) at 5:30 PM. The title of her talk is “Readymade Talk of What Goes on in the [Large] Glass”: Marcel Duchamp, Science/Technology, and Bergsonist Cubism.”
A reception for Professors Henderson and McManus will follow the lecture at the Chico Museum.
