University Film Series: ABEL RAISES CAIN, indie documentary, April 1

UNIVERSITY FILM SERIES
Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 donation appreciated
898-4642

April 1
Abel Raises Cain (2006, U.S.A.) 82 min. Directed by Jenny Abel and Jeff Hockett.
Perfect for April Fools, the documentary Abel Raises Cain has been winning awards at the Slamdance, Brooklyn Underground, Newport International, and Sarasota Film Festivals. Long before the deluge of reality TV dolts who drum up media attention with acts of idiocy, there was Alan Abel, a culture-jamming comic with a conscience. The director of the 1970s cult films Is There Sex after Death? and The Faking of the President, Abel made a name for himself several times over with media stunts ridiculous enough to be believable. His mock-moral crusade “Citizens against Breastfeeding” stirred controversy in the late ’90s, just as his “Society for Indecency to Naked Animals” had in the ’60s. Both groups made asinine calls for morality in America, and while both were complete jokes, for long stretches, the only one in on the jokes was Abel himself. Jenny Abel has directed this film about her father, the professional prankster, hailed by some journalists as the world’s greatest hoaxer and scorned by others as a menace to the media.

Author and Environmentalist David Quammen - Free Lecture this Evening

As part of the On the Creek Lecture Series, David Quammen will give a free lecture, courtesy of Chico Performances, at 7:30pm tonight in Laxson Auditorium.

Charles Darwin took 20 years to publish his theory of evolution; he produced On the Origin of Species only on learning that he was about to be scooped. Quammen’s most recent book, The Reluctant Mr. Darwin, traces the two-decade period between Charles Darwin’s original idea of natural selection and the publication of On the Origin of Species. Quammen illuminates the long process of research, thinking, and personal anguish that led from Darwin’s brief visit to the Galapagos Islands to the eventual unveiling of his theory. Quammen will be speaking about the life of Darwin as well as his work.

This performance is FREE but a ticket is required for admission. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, (530) 898-6333, 2nd and Normal Streets.

For more information please visit the web site.

CELT Workshop: Magically Improve Student Learning - Without Using Magic

Presenter: Marc Siegall, Ph.D., Department of Management

Workshop date/time: March 27, 2008, 3pm - 4:30pm; Butte 103

Do you worry that your quizzes, exams, etc. measure your students’ ability to “cram,” rather than their ability to learn? Students often do not know HOW to study well. Additionally, even if they succeeded in learning the material, overwhelming stress during exams can prevent them from demonstrating this success.

In this workshop, the presenter will share some of the “biggest bang for the buck” techniques he developed while working with students. Discussion will center on a short publication he wrote summarizing these techniques, with the goal of more widely dispersing this information to colleagues for use in their own courses. The piece is written in a relaxed, conversational tone, making it a useful reference you can provide students to help themselves improve their study skills. As part of the workshop, you will be invited to share your favorite techniques for helping students learn how to learn.

You can register for this and other CELT workshops on the web site. After entering your user name and Portal password, click on the Course Catalogue menu, click on the section entitled Professional Development, and then click the CELT link where you can view the workshop titles and enroll.
