Conversations on Diversity, Perceptions of Powerful Women, March 12

Facilitated by Dr. Lori Beth Way, Professor of Political Science

While women are increasingly visible and vocal participants in medicine, business, politics, and other prestigious fields, most of the powerful positions in the U.S. are still held by men. Why is that? This conversation will focus on the dynamics of women and power. How do women gain power? How are women with power perceived? What kind of issues do powerful women encounter? In what ways do women hold personal, professional, and institutional power? A panel consisting of women from campus and the community will begin our conversation.

Please join us for our Women’s History Month COD in exploring the role of women in our society today. We will be meeting in BMU 210 from 12-1.

Beverages and snacks are provided. Contact Tray Robinson (898-4764) for more information.

University Film Series: HAXAN (1922, Sweden), hosted by Jason Nice, History, April 8

UNIVERSITY FILM SERIES
Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 donation appreciated
898-4642

April 8
Haxan (1922, Sweden) 104 min. Directed, written by, and starring Benjamin Christensen. Introduced by Jason Nice, History and Humanities Center Board.
Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: this legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious—instead it’s a witches’ brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous.

"The Plastic Brain: What's in it for You?" Group

Gone are the days of the “hard wired” brain when it was believed we are powerless to recover from brain injuries and congenital disabilities; when we believed we are doomed to the advance of age related cognition and memory loss; or that our IQ is static. The last half of the Twentieth Century witnessed the struggle of thinkers against those beliefs and the expansion of research in the field of Brain Plasticity. The research supports understanding the brain as a dynamic, ever changing, complex web of task oriented cells ready to serve every need and desire.

Join your colleagues in a little fun and a chance to Change your Mind. To read a full description of the group, please visit the web site.

Date: Wednesdays, March 26, 2008 - April 16, 2008
Time: 12:05pm - 12:55pm
Location: Kendal 207
Facilitator: Suzanne Bills, LCSW

To register, visit the web site and enroll online. If you encounter any technical problems, please email Victor Marquez, EHS, at ehstrainer@csuchico.edu. If you would like any additional information about the group, please contact Rocio Leal, Office of Faculty and Staff Assistance & Work/Life Program, at eap@csuchico.edu or call 898-4645.
