Panetta Institute Congressional Internship
Panetta Institute Congressional Internship applications are due April 22 by 4pm. Applications are now being accepted for the fall 2008 Panetta Institute Congressional Internship. This is the best internship opportunity on the Hill. Each CSU campus sends one intern to Washington, D.C. to work with a member of the House of Representatives from California. All program costs are paid by the Panetta Institute. Applications are available in the Political Science Department (Butte Hall 741) or online. Questions? Campus Wellness Center Forum - Are You Perfect?
The Campus Wellness Center is proud to sponsor a new forum entitled “Are You Perfect?” presented by Dr. David Hibbard from the Psychology Department. CCLC Hosts Chico Leadership Conference April 9

Upcoming Deadline for CELT Conference: Call for Proposals
CSU, Chico’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching is pleased to announce the Fourteenth Annual Conference on Learning and Teaching for faculty, staff, students, and administration. The 2008 CELT Conference will be held October 8-10, 2008.
Each spring CELT puts out a call for proposals from CSU, Chico faculty, staff, students, and administrators for the following fall CELT Conference. Proposals from K-12, community colleges, and other institutions of higher education are also invited. Conference proposals are due to the Provost’s Office April 4, 2008.

Procurement & Contract Services Update
The Procurement & Contract Services web site has been updated to include information and guidelines on the procurement credit card program, reimbursements to campus employees, a listing of approved caterers (see “Forms - Food Expense Approval Form”), and basic requirements for purchases and construction transactions (see “Goods, Services & Construction Request Processing Table”).
Please review the new information if you are involved in procurement transactions for your department. Of special note is the $1000 threshold for reimbursements and the mandatory requirement for a higher authority to sign off on reimbursements for campus employees. We hope the updated information is helpful to you, and thank you for your assistance in complying with procurement regulations.

Reminder: Campus Internationalization Online Survey
The Internationalization Faculty/Staff Development Task Force is pleased to announce that an online survey of international experiences and interests is now available. We are asking that you share your international experiences, ideas, and interests. If you haven’t done so already, please take a few minutes to complete this survey as the survey results will guide us in providing CSU, Chico faculty and staff exciting learning opportunities in internationalization.
An email with a link to the survey will go out again to faculty and staff on April 3, 2008. If you have any questions regarding this survey, please contact the Task Force Chair, Hsuying Ward, Ph.D.

These items are available on a first come, first serve basis. Viewing hours are 9am to 11am and 1pm to 3pm on Thurs., April 3, 2008, located at the Warehouse, 810 Oak Street, Chico.
At the time of viewing, you may want to have a departmental vehicle available to take the smaller items selected. Items will be held for 5 working days. If the item(s) are not picked up after that time the item(s) will be returned to the surplus inventory.

Organic and Grass-Fed Ground Beef Sales: College of Agriculture
The College of Agriculture is now providing Organic, Grass-fed and a Grain-fed variety of ground beef to the campus community. The beef was raised locally at the CSU, Chico Agricultural Teaching and Research Center by CSU, Chico agriculture students. Blue Room Performances this Weekend to Benefit CSU, Chico Peace Institute
This weekend only (Friday and Saturday), professional actor Bob Weick brings his one man show to Chico, performing historian Howard Zinn’s comedy “Marx in Soho” — Marx returns in the late 20 century and comments how things have turned out since publishing his critique of capitalism.
What: “MARX IN SOHO” -Â a play on history by Howard Zinn
Where: The Blue Room Theater, Downtown Chico
When: April 4 and 5 at 7:30pm (two nights only)
Why: A benefit for The Peace Institute at CSU, Chico (a non-profit organization)

"Living with Terrorism: The Israeli Case," April 23
On April 23 at 7:30pm in Glenn 212, Bob Cottrell, Kate Transchell and Alan Gibson will be speaking on “Living with Terrorism: The Israeli Case.” The three professors were fellows in a “Foundation for the Defense of Democracy” course on terrorism in Israel. The fellows will share some of their experiences, which included interviewing terrorists in Israeli prisons. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Promoting Peace Through Recreation, April 16
On April 16 at 7:30pm in Ayres 120, Prof. Michael Leitner, Recreation and Parks Management, is speaking on the topic of “Promoting Peace Through Recreation.” The presentation will focus on coexistence programs in Israel that bring together Palestinians and Israelis. Prof. Leitner will speak specifically about a program he conducted in Israel with Arab and Jewish older adults, as well as two new programs he is working on with the Peres Peace Center in Israel. In addition, Prof. Leitner will share information about other recreational programs that are promoting coexistence among Israelis and Palestinians.
As an example of what activities are conducted in these programs, there will be music and dancing outside, weather permitting. In addition, the Recreation, Hospitality, and Parks Students (RHAPS) will be providing refreshments. It should be a fun and enlightening evening! The public is invited and admission is free.

Professor David Barrett of Villanova University Speaks TONIGHT
Professor David Barrett of Villanova University will speak this evening on “After September 11th and Iraq: Are We Safer Now?” - in BMU 100 at 7pm. Professor Barrett earned his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in 1990 and immediately established himself as a leading Presidency scholar and an expert on national intelligence. He is the author of Uncertain Warriors: Lyndon Johnson and His Vietnam Advisers (1993), the editor of Lyndon B. Johnson’s Vietnam Papers (1997), and the author of numerous articles in professional journals including Intelligence and National Security, Studies in Intelligence, and the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence.
Compiled from research gathered from 25 different research libraries, Professor Barrett’s most recent book The CIA and Congress: The Untold Story is a comprehensive account of the interactions of the heads of the CIA and congressional leaders during the Cold War. The CIA and Congress received the 2006 D. B. Hardeman prize, awarded by the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, for the outstanding book focusing on Congress.
Professor Barrett’s presentation is hosted by Pi Sigma Alpha and the Political Science Department.

Faculty/Staff Reception, April 10
All faculty and staff with international interests are invited to a reception on Thurs., April 10 from 4pm - 5:15pm in the Humanities Center, Trinity Hall. As the focal point of the event, we will have a 10 minute presentation by two students from the Child Development Program who, along with their faculty members, presented a research paper at an international conference in Dubai in March. The reception provides an opportunity to meet new people, share experiences, and find common interests.

African American Actress Val Gray Ward Performs April 17
Guest Artist, Val Gray Ward - One Woman Show

Val Gray Ward, actress, producer, cultural activist and internationally known theater personality, will be performing a potpourri of excerpts culled from her three touring shows, including reading poetry by Langston Hughes and personifying slavery abolitionist Harriet Tubman. After the performance, she will be available for questions and answers.
Ward is recognized as part of Chicago’s activist Black Arts Movement. She founded the nonprofit Kuumba Theatre in 1968. Ward took the cast and crew of Useni Eugene Perkins’ play, The Image Makers to Lagos, Nigeria, as part of the FESTAC ‘77, an international African arts festival. When she is not producing, Ward performs one-woman shows in the United States and abroad. Over the years, Ward has provided opportunities in the arts for hundreds of inner-city youth and adults.

Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together, Sustainability Roundtable, April 3
Participate in the Environmental Affairs Council’s first “Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together” Earth Month Roundtable Discussion on Thurs., April 3, from 2pm - 4pm in BMU 205. Discuss the three legs of sustainability with Deanna Berg, Director of Civic Engagement, Robyn DiFalco, AS Interim Sustainability Coordinator, Tray Robinson, Diversity Coordinator, and Jillian Buckholz, Sustainability Coordinator. Learn how each person’s role was created and their journey to their current position as well as how each person’s position is related to sustainability in a larger context.

Shidara, Japanese Taiko Drummers Coming to Laxson, April 3
Back at Laxson by popular demand, the Japanese Taiko drummers of Shidara return to astound audiences with their unique and exciting performance tomorrow, April 3 at 7:30pm. This performance is presented by Chico Performances.
A feast for the eyes as well as the ears, Shidara is an expert group of taiko drummers, dancers, and musicians dedicated to preserving the spectacular folk traditions of ancient Japan. With a plethora of drums, pipes, and stunning costumes, Shidara combines heart-pounding rhythms with theatrical flair for an evening of highly charged entertainment. With unique costumes, agile moves choreographed to the drum beats, and sound that will make your adrenaline pump, Shidara returns to Laxson for the second time in two years by popular demand.
