Colloquium Will Explore the Benefits of Altruism
The California State University, Chico College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) Faculty Colloquium will honor psychologist Daniel L. Flescher, of “The Altruistic Species: Scientific, Philosophical, and Religious Perspectives of Human Benevolence” (Templeton Foundation Press, 2007).
The yearly event, which recognizes a BSS faculty member who has received national attention for his or her scholarship, will be held on April 14, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. Worthen will discuss the concept of altruism and invite the audience to consider whether human activity can ever be understood as genuinely altruistic.
The event begins with a poster session highlighting BSS faculty scholarship from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by Worthen’s keynote presentation at 7 p.m.

Build a Better Community, Support Northstate Public Radio
Northstate Public Radio’s Spring Membership Campaign is heading into our final weekend. Your pledge will help us meet our goal and allow us to return to regular programming.
You are invited to tune in to KCHO at 91.7FM (Chico) … KFPR at 88.9FM (Redding) … or listen on-line at KCHO.org. Your gift of support will fund presentation of NPR News, Car Talk, A Prairie Home Companion, This American Life as well as Classical, Jazz and our many other offerings.
Our theme is “Building Community.” The station is working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Butte County. For each pledge of $75 or more, lumber will be donated toward the construction of Habitat’s first solar home in our region. Also, thanks to ongoing support from River Partners, listeners may opt not to receive a traditional thank-you gift and, instead, have native bird- and bee-friendly vegetation restored, in your name, throughout the Sacramento River Watershed.
Visit our web site (KCHO.org) to learn more and to make your pledge or you can phone us, toll-free, at 1-800-234-5246. Each gift will help the station meets its operational goals, provide housing for local families, and restore native habitat in our region.
You may also contact Lollie DeYoung in our business office to learn about contributions through University payroll deductions.

The Importance of Being Earnest
Introduced by Laura Nice, Humanities and English
Oscar Wilde’s comic jewel sparkles in Anthony Asquith’s film adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest. Featuring brilliantly polished performances by Michael Redgrave, Joan Greenwood, and Dame Edith Evans, the enduringly hilarious story of two young women who think themselves engaged to the same nonexistent man is given the grand Technicolor treatment. Seldom has a classic stage comedy been so engagingly transferred to the screen. (1952, U.K., 95 minutes)

International Forum, Apr 15
History and contemporary life in Nicaragua: A student forum presented by Karina McCormack, Lorena Rodriguez, and Steve Lewis, Latin American Studies
Nearly thirty years ago, a leftist nationalist group calling itself the Sandinistas overthrew Nicaragua’s US-backed dictator and established a revolutionary government. Throughout the 1980s, they struggled to develop their country and defeat a CIA-backed proxy army called the contras. In 1990, war-weary Nicaraguans voted the Sandinistas out of power. But peace has not brought prosperity. Today, Nicaragua is the second-poorest country in the hemisphere, and over a million Nicaraguans have left the country to find work in neighboring Costa Rica.
CSU, Chico alum Karina McCormack and current student Lorena Rodriguez recently spent months in Nicaragua, living and working on a coffee plantation and an orphanage, respectively. In this richly illustrated presentation, they will discuss current conditions in Nicaragua and the legacy of the Sandinista revolution. Tues., April 15, 5pm - 5:50pm in HOLT 170.
