The Bernard Osher Foundation Supports CSU, Chico Reentry Student Scholarships
The Bernard Osher Foundation recently approved a CSU, Chico Continuing Education grant proposal to provide scholarships for reentry students. The goal of the program is to support students who want to return to the University to finish a degree program.
This award provides $50,000 for reentry scholarships for students whose studies were interrupted for at least five years by circumstances beyond their control and who now want to resume their university studies at CSU, Chico.
This is the second year in a row that CSU, Chico has received funding for reentry students through the Bernard Osher Foundation. To increase access, the Osher scholarship program will give priority to applicants who are direct transfers from community colleges and other newly returning students.

Book Requisitions
We would like to remind our faculty and staff that the bookstore buyback will begin Tuesday, May 13. For books and quantities to be placed on our buyback list, we must have a textbook order for the fall term. Defensive Driver Training Tomorrow
The CSU Vehicle Use Policy requires that State employees (including student employees) complete Defensive Driver Training every four years in order to drive a State, rental, or privately-owned vehicle on State business. In an effort to meet the needs of the Campus, the Vehicle Reservations Office is offering Defensive Driver Training each week.
Employees can confirm the date of their last training by inquiring at vehicles@csuchico.edu. Reponses will typically be by return e-mail on the next business day.
Please have your California Driver License number and expiration date, and CSU, Chico employee/student ID number available at the time of the class.
Location and time varies by session. To view the availability of sessions, location, and to register, log into the Web Based Training (WBT) system online, click on the Course Catalog menu—the workshops are posted under the EH&S tab. If you need assistance logging into the WBT system, please contact EH&S at ehstrainer@csuchico.edu.

International Workshop: July 4-16, Contigliano, Italy
This summer come study and experiment how to merge innovative interactive technology with history, art, and culture in the castle of a breathtaking medieval town in the heart of Italy.
Contigliano is an undiscovered medieval citadel in the center of Italy, in the province of Rieti surrounded by nature, one hour from Rome.
This workshop is an 2-week full-time course, designed for students, scholars, and artists from architecture, design, media arts, and engineering fields about media theory, visual arts, and technology in their relation to oral history and urban interaction. The workshop has classes in English and offers quality individual tutoring, and is designed for the students to produce, at the end of the training, a multimedia art work to be exhibited in the medieval town. Moreover, this experience abroad wants to create an ongoing dialogue between international artists, as a longer term project.
The workshop is organized by the non-profit association MEDIARS (Center for Interactive Media for Art and Entertainment) in collaboration with the town of Contigliano, together with international scholars from California State University, Chico, UCLA, the University of Florence and the University of l’Aquila.

Travel Services: Current Commercial Car Rental Contract
State employees are reminded of the current Commercial Car Rental contract negotiated by the Department of General Services (DGS). Only the car rental agencies under contract with the State are authorized for State travel. They are:
ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR (Primary)
Alamo Rent a Car (Back-up)
National Car Rental (Back-up)
In the event Enterprise does not have an appropriate vehicle available, or does not represent a location, Alamo and National are permitted as back-up options. The ONLY authorized forms of payment for State car rentals are the American Express Government Card or the CRBTA (Car Rental Business Travel Account). See pages 30-31 of the online Travel Manual for details regarding use of the CRBTA.
These approved forms of payment, combined with the use of the State rental car contract, achieve the protections afforded in the Master Contract program (LDW/CDW/Liability included). The use of personal credit cards or cash is expressly prohibited and void the terms of the contract.
State employees must submit a Travel Request to Travel Services PRIOR to departure. Visit the Travel Services web site for all State travel forms. Reservations must be made by the traveler or the college/department. Travel Services does not reserve vehicles.

Campus Events in May: Rental Equipment and Reservations Update
Each year the University hosts a large number of events on campus, and this year is no exception. Due to the large number of events this month and through the end of the semester, all tables, chairs and equipment have been reserved for use from Wed., May 14 through Friday, May 30.
The staff of Facilities Management and Services is also impacted by the events scheduled and will not be able to accommodate all new requests. Please contact Facilities Reservations for events that can be scheduled into buildings and rooms with the existing equipment in place and for references for rental equipment needs.
Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.

Commencement Vending Policy
Just a reminder that under the policies contained in EM 86-12 no vendor, including recognized student organizations, may solicit, trade, or sell anything on campus without a permit from the Student Activities Office.
No permits for such sales and solicitation activity will be issued for Commencement weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 24 & 25. If individuals and/or organizations are found to be conducting sales and solicitation, they will be asked to stop this activity, and if they refuse, University Police will be notified. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

The University Art Gallery presents the 53rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition of works by students enrolled in the Department of Art and Art History. Eighty-two students submitted 129 pieces for consideration. Guest juror Diana Daniels, Associate Curator at the Crocker Art Museum, selected 34 pieces by 29 artists for the exhibition.
A reception will take place at the gallery on Thursday, May 15, 7pm - 9pm. At 7:30pm, prizewinners will be announced for the Annual Student Exhibition and the Turner Annual Printmakers Invitational.
The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The gallery is located in Taylor Hall, California State University Chico, at First Street between Salem and Normal streets. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4pm. This exhibition is funded by Student Instructionally Related Activities Fees.

Final Performances of 2008 Spring Musical, "A Little Night Music," Presented May 8-10
“A Little Night Music,” an eight-time Tony Award-winning romantic story brimming with dark humor and waltz music by modern American musical theatre icon Stephen Sondheim, completes its two week run with performances May 8-10 beginning at 7:30pm in Harlen Adams Theatre.
“A Little Night Music” features beautiful costumes and sets, a medium-sized orchestra, and some of CSU, Chico’s most talented musical theatre students, as well as well-known guest performers from the community.
The score contains Sondheim’s best-known song, “Send in the Clowns,” as well as “The Glamorous Life,” “You Must Meet My Wife,” “Every Day a Little Death,” “Liaisons,” “In Praise of Women,” “A Weekend in the Country,” and “The Miller’s Son.”

What might the US be like had JFK not been shot? A talk by Jim Douglass
This Friday, May 9 at 7pm in Ayres 106 The Peace Institute at CSU, Chico presents author Jim Douglass discussing lost possibilities: What might the US be like had JFK not been shot?
Douglass is a longtime writer and peace activist. His book JFK and the Unspeakable has just been published by Orbis Press. In addition to considering the historical possibilities that have been lost, Douglass offers his evidence for U.S. Government involvement in JFK’s assassination and the motivation for such involvement.
There will be a question and answer period following Douglass’ remarks. This event is free and open to the public.

BMU 3rd Floor Gallery Exhibition; Reception May 7
The DaDa Art Education Club of CSU, Chico, has organized a juried exhibition of the artwork produced by students who are studying to be art educators. The show, which runs until May 23, will show the diverse and creative art produced by future art instructors. A reception, complete with food and drinks, will be held at 5pm, May 7 in the gallery. Why Preserve Species? Some Philosophical Problems (and Answers)

Most environmentalists believe that there is value in preserving species and ecosystems beyond their purely instrumental worth as resources for humans. In his talk, Robert C. Jones will present an overview of the philosophical rationales that environmentalists have relied upon for such views, and evaluate them to see which one(s) (if any) provide a sound justification for these common environmentalist intuitions.
Robert C. Jones received his PhD in philosophy from Stanford University in 2005. In the fall, Robert joins the faculty at California State University, Chico, as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and director of CAPE.

"Fighting Hate Crimes," May 7
On Wednesday, May 7 at 8pm in Ayres 120, Nancy Appel, associate director of the Anti-Defamation League of San Francisco will be speaking on the subject of “Fighting Hate Crimes.”
Fighting Hate Crime will focus on:
The essence of what a hate crime is - and what it isn’t
Effective investigative techniques for hate crimes
The unique harm that bias-motivated violence has on individual targets and their communities
How communities can respond effectively to hate violence
The presentation is dynamic and interactive. The goal is for participants to understand how hateful attitudes, left unchecked, can escalate into violence against individuals and property. Another aim for participants to feel empowered to speak out against bias incidents in their communities.
At the ADL, Nancy Appel advocates daily on behalf of people experiencing anti-Semitism and discrimination, most often in school and workplace settings. She speaks to law enforcement, educators, attorneys, and the public on topics including anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice, hate crime, church-state separation, and extremism. Her advocacy work extends to lobbying on civil rights legislation, editorial writing, and television and radio appearances. Nancy also regularly advises the public and consults with Internet-based companies regarding offensive content and free speech issues.

Free Rock Concert and Humane Society Benefit, May 9
Friday, May 9, the Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA) will present Epitaph Records artists “The Matches” in a free concert at the Free Speech area. Also on the bill are Drive Thru Records’ “Self Against City” and local favorites “The Shimmies.”
Warp Tour veterans, The Matches, have just returned from the East Coast where they headlined the Alternative Press Tour, and they leave for Japan in late May. The show begins at 5:30pm with animals and educational presentations by the Butte Humane Society while the music starts at 6:30pm. Donations to the local shelter will be accepted during the show.

Retirement Celebration for Dennis Graham
Please join us in a retirement celebration honoring former Vice President for Business and Finance Dennis Graham on Wed., May 21, from 3pm - 5pm in the Student Services Center lobby. Dennis served as Vice President for Business and Finance for the past 11 years and has been instrumental in our most recent master plan development, and the planning and development of many major capital projects. We are, therefore, extremely pleased to be able to host his retirement party in the newly completed Student Services Center.
Dennis was a leader in bringing sustainability to our campus, which has led to CSU, Chico being recognized as a leader in sustainability in the CSU System. Dennis invited the California Integrated Waste Management board to the table to help in the development of our goal to obtain a GOLD LEED rating for the Student Services building. This planning began six years ago when sustainability and LEED certifications were still developing. He was instrumental in obtaining campus and System buy-in to build sustainable buildings and maintain the existing buildings using sustainable products. His legacy to this campus is not only in the buildings that have been built during his tenure, but also the mindset to build a healthier environment for our future students and generations to come.
