Instruction in Chinese and Arabic Expanded

Beginning with the fall 2008 semester, California State University, Chico will offer regularly scheduled courses in Chinese and Arabic taught by native speakers hired exclusively for the new program.

CSU, Chico has taught these and many other languages in a self-instructional/tutorial format for years, as well as a regular complement of courses in Japanese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Hebrew. However, with the growing strategic and economic importance of the Middle East and China to the United States, the University sought to expand the teaching of these languages.

Starting this fall, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will offer first- and second-semester Arabic and similar courses in Chinese/Putongua (Mandarin), in addition to a conversational Chinese course.

The complete news release is available online.

ARI 09/10 Systemwide Call for Proposals

CSU Agricultural Research Initiative (ARI) funding is available for the 2009/10 fiscal year to all qualified campus faculty and research staff on a competitive basis. The ARI provides public funds that require at least one-to-one match with industry/agency resources to fund high impact applied agricultural research, development, and technology transfer.

All proposals must address improving the economic efficiency, productivity, profitability and sustainability of California agriculture and its allied industries. System proposals are for projects that address issues that have statewide significance and require collaborative research with other CSU or UC campuses. New to the 09/10 guidelines are specific research areas to be given a high funding priority. These areas are listed in bold in the middle of page 8.

System proposals require submission of pre-proposals, which are due in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (RESP) by August 4, 2008. The ARI 2009/10 Systemwide Call for Proposals is available on the RESP Web site. Interactive forms are available on the ARI Calstate site.

If you have problems using the interactive forms or need proposal assistance, contact Karen Hansen at x6286.
