Herbarium Collection Contributes to Climate Study
The Herbarium at California State University, Chico, located on the first floor of Holt Hall, is a little-known treasure, a warehouse of approximately 98,000 native plants. Data on native plants from the herbarium was recently part of a study to analyze current distributions of plants native to California and to project distributions into the future.
The herbarium, a scientific collection of plants, was recently placed under the auspices of the Northern California Natural History Museum (NCNHM). It is part of the Consortium of California Herbaria, a group of 17 museum collections that serves as a gateway to information about plant specimens housed in herbaria throughout the state. The consortium database now includes information for more than 959,000 specimens.
David Ackerly, UC Berkeley professor of integrative biology, led a team of botanists that used herbaria consortium data and analyzed the current distributions of more than 2,000 plants native to California. They then projected plant distribution into the future under various climate change models. Their results suggest that many of the native California species are in great danger unless they can move to new localities with appropriate climate.

Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP)
Counseling services are available for employees who wish to seek assistance through the FSAP. Eligible employees include CSU, Chico State employees, as well as employees of the University Foundation, Research and Sponsored Programs, and Associated Students. The FSAP assists individuals in their efforts to address personal difficulties which may be impacting work performance. The FSAP serves as a confidential program offering referrals to a professional licensed counselor or other resources. This is a voluntary and free service provided to employees and their immediate family members.
The program includes up to three sessions with a licensed psychologist who will, with mutual agreement of the client, determine if further counseling or other assistance could be beneficial, and refer client to local resources. The decision to seek outside services, and any subsequent fees, are the client’s decision and responsibility. Some fees for referral services may be covered by employee medical benefits.
Every effort has been made to keep all calls, inquiries, and appointments confidential. For more information, contact Clarice Reutlinger, FSAP Liaison, at 898-4645.

Dylan Tellesen writes that he “is an artist, adoring husband, father of two little crazies, skinny dipper, Butte College teacher, organic matter eater, sexy dancer, and walker of the earth, who knows he is going to die.” He also studied artmaking at L’Accademia di Belli Arte in Florence, Italy, and San Francisco State University. He currently exhibits his art in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, and his hometown of Chico, where he recently completed an enormous exterior mural at the local Boys and Girls Club.
In this show, Tellesen creates a parallel universe where the effects of human waste on the natural world have unexpectedly beautiful and often terrifying results. Evolution gone awry, e-waste habitat, and misconstrued adages combine to reinterpret our future and give us pause to reflect on our own.” Check out http://dtellesen.blogspot.com/ and http://www.dtellesen.com/.
The Humanities Center Gallery is located in Trinity Hall. A closing night reception will be held Thursday, Aug. 28, 5-7pm. For more information, call 898-4642.
