Kinesiology Professor Josh Trout Co-authors Book on ‘Supersized’ PE

Josh Trout, professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Chico, and David Kahan, PhD, San Diego State University, have co-authored “Supersized PE: A Comprehensive Guidebook for Teaching Overweight Students,” published by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Trout said that the goal of the book is to help youth love physical activity and schedule it daily throughout their lives. The book is designed to help parents, physical educators and leaders of physical activity programs to better understand the physical, emotional and psychological issues that reduce the overweight child’s quality of life and help them learn how to be physically active for a lifetime.

“Being physically active every day is especially crucial for children struggling with weight issues,” said Trout. “That is why it is critically important for all parents to demand their children participate in quality physical education and physical activity programs, and get a minimum of 60 minutes of daily physical activity.”

Masks Available Due to Air Quality

With the recent fires, Student Health Service is giving away free “N95” particulate respirator/masks to students/staff/faculty of CSU, Chico. These masks were recommended by the Butte County Air Quality Management District to help protect against the very unhealthy air quality conditions we are experiencing locally due to the recent Lightning Fires. The masks filter out 95 percent of particles measuring 0.3 micrometers diameter or larger.

You can pick up the masks at the health center by presenting your Wildcat ID card at the Receptions Desk or the Acute Care Clinic until the air quality improves. We will give a maximum of three (3) masks per person. For ongoing information about the air quality here in Butte County, you can log onto: http://www.bcaqmd.org/

Emergency Management

About three weeks ago you received an email from me introducing the new campus Emergency Preparedness and Management Plan (EPMP) and a request for at least one Department Emergency Coordinator from each department/discipline. I have scheduled three seminars to familiarize your designated Department Emergency Coordinator with the EPMP and to guide them with the development of your Department Emergency Plan. Please have your designee attend one of the three scheduled seminars. Registration is accomplished on the EH&S learning portal under the “emergency preparedness” tab on the “professional development” page. This training is mandatory.

If your particular discipline/department occupies more than one building or area of the campus please provide a Department Emergency Coordinator from each geographic area. If you have any questions at all please contact me.
