Director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT)

Dr. Lee Altier, professor in the College of Agriculture, has been chosen as the new Director for the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), effective Fall 08. Lee has been a member of the faculty at CSU, Chico since 1995. Lee has served on the CELT Advisory Board for several years and is widely known on campus for his innovative use of on-line technologies for expanding his classroom beyond the physical limits of the campus, including adventurous forays into international education in Thailand and elsewhere.

“I am honored and excited to be given the opportunity to promote excellence in teaching and learning at Chico State,” said Dr. Altier, “Teaching is fundamental to everything in which we are engaged here, and CELT has served an important role in facilitating high standards of pedagogy. As the new director, I will ensure that CELT continues to facilitate dialogue and understanding of effective teaching methods and learning environments and to recognize and award faculty achievements. I am particularly interested in providing support for new faculty, promoting the teacher-scholar model, and facilitating education for a sustainable global society. It is my sincere desire that CELT be a highly relevant means of engaging the entire campus community in our shared quest toward educational excellence.”

Dr. Altier will replace Dr. Eddie Vela (Psychology), who did an excellent job leading CELT over the last 18 months. Eddie recently accepted the position of associate dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Congratulations to Lee on his new position and a warm thanks to Eddie, for his outstanding service as CELT director.

CELT, founded in 1994, is dedicated to enhancing the quality of the academic environment and committed to rewarding and promoting the ability of our faculty to teach well, improving the learning process, and providing faculty with the support, training, and mentoring needed to provide high quality learning environments on our campus.
