New Law Regarding Home-Generated Sharps Waste
Beginning Sept. 1, 2008, State law (Section 118286 of the California Health and Safety Code) makes it illegal to dispose of sharps waste in the trash or recycling containers, and requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container.
Section 117671 of the California Health and Safety Code defines “home-generated sharps waste” as hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications derived from a household, including a multifamily residence or household.
The following are some of the disposal options available to you for disposal of sharps waste:
Pharmacies. Some drug store chains take back their customers’ needles, although large quantities might not be accepted.
Mail-Back Service. A list of sharps waste mail-back services authorized for use in California is available from the California Department Of Public Health (CDPH).
Community drop-off locations. Butte County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility will accept home-generated sharps waste from Butte County residents. Northern Recycling & Waste Services will accept home generated sharps waste for a small fee.
Student Health Center. The Student Health Center’s nursing station will accept properly sealed used sharps containers from students and the campus community.
If you have any questions, please contact EH&S at ext. 5126.

Defensive Driver Training - Sept. 2
The CSU Vehicle Use Policy requires that State employees (including student employees) complete Defensive Driver Training every four years in order to drive a State, rental, or privately-owned vehicle on State business. In an effort to meet the needs of the Campus, the Vehicle Reservations Office is offering Defensive Driver Training each week.
Employees can confirm the date of their last training by inquiring at vehicles@csuchico.edu. Reponses will typically be by return e-mail on the next business day.
Please have your California Driver License number and expiration date, and CSU, Chico employee/student ID number available at the time of the class.
Location and time varies by session. To view the availability of sessions, location, and to register, log into the Web Based Training (WBT) system and click on the Course Catalog menu — the workshops are posted under the EH&S tab. If you need assistance logging into the WBT system, please contact EH&S.

University Film Series: Polanski's KNIFE IN THE WATER, Sept. 16
University Film Series
Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 donation appreciated
898-4642
Sept. 16
Knife in the Water (1962, Poland) 94 min. Directed by Roman Polanski. Hosted by Jason Tannen, University Art Gallery.*
The second protégé of the Lodz Film School to become an international art house sensation (after Andrzej Wajda), Polanski pounced on the scene with a mischievous glint in his eye with this film, whose title suggests violence, suspense, and mystery. A minimalist, three-character drama of simmering marital discord, class warfare, and eroticism, Knife constantly thwarts expectations.
* Part of the Humanities Center’s theme this year: Regarding Beauty.

University Film Series: MadCat Women's International Film Fest, Sept. 2
University Film Series
Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 donation appreciated
898-4642
Sept. 2, 2008
MadCat Women’s International Film Festival ID Docs (2005-2006, Lithuania, Croatia, Australia, Germany, U.S.A., Belgium, Austria) about 102 min. Curated by Ariella Ben-Dov.
This is the second visit of MadCat to the University Film Series. First, it was based in San Francisco. Now, it hails from Brooklyn (what doesn’t these days?). Tonight’s program will include seven films: the longest is thirty minutes; the shortest is one.
Identity cannot be reduced to stats on a badge. It is both personal and public, elusive and fixed. Using a patient camera and lyrical imagery, these filmmakers gently probe how society, biology, place, and even appliances play a role in who we are and how we think of ourselves and others.—Ben-Dov
