Butte College and CSU, Chico Partner for New Cross Enrollment Program

Butte College President Diana Van Der Ploeg and California State University, Chico President Paul Zingg announced a new partnership effort known as the “Cross Enrollment” program at the Butte College Chico Center, 2320 Forest Ave, on Sept. 5, 10:30 a.m.

“This partnership truly helps our students in their transfer experience. Since Butte College has the highest transfer rate to CSU, Chico, this new program makes the transition even easier for those working toward their bachelor’s degrees and helps ensure their academic success,” said Van Der Ploeg.

Cross Enrollment now allows Butte College students to enroll in a 3-unit class at CSU, Chico at no charge, with no extra fees.

News Release: Teachers Meet To Address Needs In Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 8, 2008

Teachers Meet To Address Needs In Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

California State University, Chico will be hosting approximately 120 teachers and administrators representing all grade levels from preschool through college at the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) North State Summit Friday, Sept. 12. Activities will take place in the BMU Auditorium.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the serious need for U.S. schools to produce more scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technology experts. The conference will promote inquiry-based, hands-on science in K-12 classrooms and showcase best practices, including how CSU, Chico faculty and staff can help school districts with STEM education.

Noting a steady decline in the number of U.S. citizens training to become scientists and engineers, the National Science Board states, “[I]f action is not taken now to change these trends, we could reach 2020 and find that the ability of U.S. research and education institutions to regenerate has been damaged, and their preeminence has been lost to other areas of the world.” The national crisis in STEM fields has been the topic of several recent books, including Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat” and “Rising above the Gathering Storm,” published by the National Academies Press.

The complete news release is available online.

Wildcat Mail Upgrade Presentation -- Google Apps for Education

The Student e-mail system is in need of a significant upgrade, and Information Resources has been researching possible upgrade options during the past several months. After much research and consultation with key campus constituents, we are recommending the student e-mail system move to a hosted solution, Google Apps for Education. Google essentially provides Academic institutions with world class e-mail solutions at no-cost. This solution integrates nicely into our Portal and Blackboard Vista systems, and will provide a robust and reliable e-mail system for our students for years to come.

Pilot testing of the new Student e-mail system will begin mid-Fall, with full student migration targeted for early Spring Semester. Faculty and Staff are encouraged to attend one of our informational presentations which will provide general information about the project and Google’s services, and to discuss possible changes to department-specific communication processes. More information will be available on the web in the coming weeks.

The following presentations are designed to discuss Faculty, Staff, and department-specific questions and processes. Students will have the opportunity to discuss student-specific questions during their targeted presentations the week of Sept. 22 (watch Student Announcements for details).

MLIB Studio A: 9am until 10am, Wed., Sept. 10
MLIB Studio A: 11am until Noon, Thurs., Sept. 11

Rawlins Environmental Prize 2008

In 2006 Jack Rawlins established the Rawlins Environmental Prize, which has as its principle goal to recognize outstanding student research or projects that raise environmental awareness or directly contribute to increasing sustainability at both the local and global levels. Annually, two $6,000 awards will be given, one during the fall semester and the other during the spring.

In the 2008-2009 academic year the Rawlins Advisory Committee will be accepting proposals that address new approaches to energy production or conservation, efficient use of waste agricultural biomass, and water issues.

We strongly encourage proposals from individual students or collaborative student research teams under the direction of a faculty mentor that addresses one or more of the interest areas. Previous prize recipients are welcome to submit proposals.

Proposals will be accepted until Sept. 26, 2008 for the Fall Prize. Award will be announced Oct. 3, 2008.

Counseling and Wellness: Name Change, New Location, and New Groups this Semester

The Counseling and Wellness Center, has relocated to the new student services building (SSC 430). Our new title (we dropped the term “Psychological”) matches the spirit of our new location. It is lighter, brighter and more “student friendly”. The Counseling and Wellness Center offers personal confidential counseling (group, individual, couples) to regularly enrolled students. As group counseling has been found to be more effective than individual work for certain kinds of issues, the following groups will be offered this fall:

Assertive Self-Esteem
Better Relationships
Got Motivation?
Making Peace with Food and Body
Women’s Relationships
Disabled Students Support and
Bipolar Support

For more information about our services and our groups, stop by, visit our Web site, or call 898-6345.

University Film Series: Polanski's KNIFE IN THE WATER, Sept. 16

University Film Series
Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Little Theatre (Ayres 106)
$3 donation appreciated
898-4642

Sept. 16
Knife in the Water (1962, Poland) 94 min. Directed by Roman Polanski. Hosted by Jason Tannen, University Art Gallery.*
The second protege of the Lodz Film School to become an international art house sensation (after Andrzej Wajda), Polanski pounced on the scene with a mischievous glint in his eye with this film, whose title suggests violence, suspense, and mystery. A minimalist, three-character drama of simmering marital discord, class warfare, and eroticism, Knife constantly thwarts expectations.
*Part of the Humanities Center’s theme this year: Regarding Beauty.
