CSU, Chico To Host California Indian Fair for Partnerships in Research
On November 1-2, California State University, Chico will host a research fair focused on collaborative projects in the arena of sustainable management of natural resources. The research fair is the result of cooperation between many California Native American community members, agencies, faculty, students and nonprofit organizations throughout California.
The organizers of the fair state on the California Indian Fair for Research Partnerships Web site state that research in Native communities often does not benefit tribes. “The Research Fair is focused on changing this so that tribes decide what topics are researched and have equal partnership with professional researchers. The goal is to make the resources of universities accessible and available to communities. This event will be a place to talk about natural resource issues and partnership with universities, agencies and nonprofit groups.”
Don Hankins, Geography and Planning, CSU, Chico is one of the organizers of the fair. He said that the organizers hope that the fair will help bridge the gap between the academy and communities by creating a forum in which both groups can work together on identifying research topics of mutual interest. It will consist of workshops on participatory research, creating common ground among participants and understanding the needs and interests of communities.

Religious Holidays Observed
As a follow up to the Provost’s earlier memo regarding the Interfaith Calendar, students observing the Jewish High Holy Days should not be penalized for missing classes and should be accommodated for exams and papers due during this Holy time.
Rosh Hashanah, beginning at sundown on Sept. 29 and ending at sundown on Oct. 1, and Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, begins at sundown on Oct. 8 and ends one hour after sundown on Oct. 9, are intensive holidays involving a great deal of prayer and prohibition against any kind of work being performed. On other Jewish holidays throughout the year, such as Chanukah, work can be performed and missing classes is not an issue.

Sustainability Summits, I, II, III
Announcing: Sustainability Summits, I, II, III
This semester we will hold three facilitated discussions about the following list of topics. Not every topic would be covered on any given date. Each conversation will be facilitated by a different person, depending on the topics. The purpose of the summits is to assess campus progress toward sustainability, compare ourselves to other “green” campuses, and determine the actions we will take to achieve our goals.
Sustainability Summits, I, II, III, Sept. 30, Oct. 27 and Dec. 2, Kendall 207/209 from 3pm - 5 pm
What does it mean to be a “green” campus?
How do we compare to other institutions within the CSU?
How do we compare to other campuses in the U.S. that have received recognition for being “green”?
What have we achieved to date and what are our commitments as a campus under the Presidents Climate Agreement?
Are there gaps in terms of our own achievements, compared to others?
How do we continue to create a culture of sustainability on campus?
How can and should we continue to integrate sustainability into the curriculum?
Let us know which topics you feel deserve the greatest attention, and if there are others you would like to see added to the list, please send them to Scott G. McNall at the Institute for Sustainable Development. We hope that students, faculty, staff and community members and partners will join together in deepening the conversation about a sustainable future.

Humanities Center/Religious Studies: "Barack Obama's Endorsement of Faith-Based Initiatives," Andy Flescher, Oct. 3
Oct. 3
Andrew Flescher, Religious Studies “Bringing Religion to the Public Square in the Context of the Separation of Church and State: Barack Obama’s Endorsement of Faith-Based Initiatives” Humanities Center Friday Symposium co-hosted with the Religious Studies Lecture Series, 3-5pm, Trinity 100, 898-4739.
This paper explores the tension between Obama’s support of faith-based initiatives and his belief in the separation of church and state. Can the separation of church and state, which is intended to protect the right of citizens who do not belong to the majority religion to be free to pursue their own way of life, ever accommodate government funding for sectarian programs? Is Obama’s compromise a tenable one, in spirit with the first amendment, and still able to deliver the pragmatic benefits it is intended to deliver? What are some of the likely objections of the right and of the left to the Obama compromise, and is Obama in a position to answer them?

Flight from Death (2005, U.S.A.) 90 min. Directed and edited by Patrick Shen. Hosted by Jeff Livingston, History
Narrated by Gabriel Byrne, this seven-time Best Documentary award-winning film (including the Silver Lake and Beverly Hills Film Festivals) is the most comprehensive and mind-blowing investigation of humankind’s relationship with death ever captured on film. Hailed by many viewers as “life-transformational,” the film uncovers death anxiety as a possible root cause of many of our behaviors on a psychological, spiritual, and cultural level. Following the work of the late cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker and his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Denial of Death, the film explores the ongoing research of a group of social psychologists that may forever change the way we look at ourselves and the world.
