Outstanding Thesis and Outstanding Project Annual Competition--Call for Nominations

In 1988, the Graduate School initiated the Outstanding Thesis Award to give special recognition to the graduate student who had authored the most significant piece of research as their culminating activity in a master’s program across the disciplines. In 1991, the Outstanding Project Award was instituted to recognize the most creative scholarship conducted by a master’s candidate enrolled in 699 project units for their culminating activity.

Nominees for the 2008/2009 Outstanding Thesis or Project Award must have graduated with their master’s degree in the spring, summer, or fall of 2008. Each college may submit a maximum of one thesis and/or one project nomination. The deadline for each college to submit one copy of the nominated thesis and/or project with the completed applications to the Graduate School is 5pm on Friday, March 6 2009.

Applications and information are available on the Graduate School’s Web site. Please direct questions about the award or the nomination procedures to the coordinator of the program, Jane Rysberg (530-898-5178).

Travel Accounting: Current Commercial Car Rental Contract

State employees are reminded of the current Commercial Car Rental contract negotiated by the Department of General Services (DGS). Only the car rental agencies under contract with the State are authorized for State travel.

They are:
• ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR (Primary)
• Alamo Rent a Car (Secondary)
• National Car Rental (Secondary)

In the event Enterprise does not have an appropriate vehicle available, or does not represent a location, Alamo and National are permitted as secondary options. The ONLY authorized forms of payment for State car rentals are the American Express Government Card or the CRBTA (Car Rental Business Travel Account). See pages 29-31 of the online Travel Manual for details regarding use of the CRBTA and how to reserve a vehicle.

These approved forms of payment, combined with the use of the State rental car contract, achieve the protections afforded in the Master Contract program (LDW/CDW/Liability included). The use of personal credit cards or cash is expressly prohibited and voids the terms of the contract.
State employees must submit a Travel Request to Travel Accounting (zip 140) PRIOR to departure. Visit the Travel Accounting Web site for all State travel forms. Reservations must be made by the traveler or their designee. Travel Accounting does not reserve vehicles.

Nov. 5: Now What?

It’s the day after the election … you just voted or maybe didn’t. How did it go? More important, now what?

Please join the Office of Civic Engagement and AS Legislative Affairs Council Nov. 5 in Butte 104 at 6pm for “Election Day” by Katy Chevigny. This documentary film will be followed by thoughtful dialogue on our own experiences in the 2008 elections and how we keep momentum going now that we know the results of the election. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

“Election Day” is a timely and inspiring story of American democracy at work, combining 11 stories shot simultaneously on Nov. 2, 2004, from dawn until long past midnight into one. Director Katy Chevigny says: “In making ‘Election Day,’ we set out to depict the real people who make our democracy work, but whose actions are not the stuff of the evening news. Our jumping-off point was the 2000 election, which had brought the failures of our voting systems into sharp focus. We decided to look at how the shadow of that election would affect the attitudes and experiences of voters and poll workers across the country in 2004.”

Award-winning Musical Comedy "Spelling Bee" comes to Laxson Nov. 19

Chico Performances is proud to present the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a delightful musical comedy full of wit and laughter taking place on Nov. 19, 2008 at 7:30pm.

This Tony Award-winning musical is an “ingenious blend of simplicity and sophistication. It’s not merely funny, it’s wise,” hailed the Wall Street Journal. A heartfelt coming-of-age musical comedy about a spelling contest and twitchy teens delights with witty songs and solid punch lines, teaching various lessons about life, tough competition, the pains of growing up, and building character. Ultimately, the lesson learned is that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.
