Today's Students: Can we teach them differently than the way we learned?
Over the past few years, the Technology and Learning Program has heard a growing concern from many of you (the faculty) about how to manage the new technologies students are bringing into and using in the classroom.
On next Friday, Nov. 14, from 12pm - 2pm in studio A, there will be a TILT Symposium and discussion on the topic of Using Technologies in the Classroom.
Questions we think faculty will want to discuss are:
• How do faculty manage students using so many different technology devices: cell phones, MP3 players, iPods, laptops, or others?
• What is the place for these in teaching and learning?
• How do some faculty utilize devices such as “Clickers” or Student Response Systems to engage students in the classroom (or at a distance)?
• What classroom management skills do faculty need to keep control and order when students bring technology into the classroom?
• How does this affect seat time and effective classroom instruction?
To stimulate your thoughts and possible questions, you may want to ask your colleagues to watch and enjoy these YouTube videos before coming. We will show them also.
A Vision of Students Today
Hope to see you there. Please contact TLP if you have any questions, x6167.

Harvest Food Drive
The department of HCSV’s Community Health class and the Health Professionals Association are helping the Jesus Center in their annual Harvest Food Drive. The food collected during this drive helps make it possible for the Center to serve over 100,000 hot meals per year. The Jesus Center feeds Chico’s hungry.
As faculty, you can help the food drive in different ways; offer extra credit for donations, offer donating as an alternative assignment, encourage students to donate, or by simply announcing the food drive and the following information to your students.
The Harvest Food Drive will run from Monday, Nov. 10 - Friday, Nov. 14. Drop off locations: BMU’s Information Center, Common Grounds, Selvester’s Cafe, and HCSV Department office in Butte 607.
Specific food items that are needed include: sugar, cake mix, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna, syrup, mayonnaise, cans of coffee, and large (#10) cans of fruits or vegetables. Non-food items being sought include: paper products, socks, disposable razors, and soap. Cash donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. A $35 donation is enough to cover 20 meals.
Please assist the Harvest Food Drive and make CSU, Chico a campus that cares.
For more information contact Holly Nevarez, Department of HCSV, 530-898-5013.

Buildings on the south side of campus will lose power, heating and ventilation so occupancy is prohibited. Please take precautionary measures to turn off your computer and sensitive electronic devices during this shutdown. For safety reasons, power will be restored to campus for night lighting. Traffic control will be in effect along W. 1st Street at the construction site.
Thanks for your continued patience as we get closer to opening the WREC. Questions or concerns, please contact Lynda H. Miracle, Construction Projects Manager x3466.

Restorative Justice - A Communitarian View of Justice, Nov. 10
The Department of Political Science presents, “Restorative Justice - A Communitarian View of Justice,” a lecture by Joao Salm.
Restorative Justice is a set of principles whose use dates to the oldest records of human communities. In recent times, we have associated the implementation of these principles to specific institutions. This association has raised several criticisms from theorists and practitioners. In this presentation, Salm places Restorative Justice principles into perspective and argues that these criticisms are part of an astigmatic perception of justice. He demonstrates that for a society whose arrangements are undergoing a crisis of rationality, the best way to implement Restorative Justice principles is by co-producing formal and informal applications of these principles.
Key words: Restorative Justice, Community, Formal and substantive organizations, Co-production of justice.
The lecture takes place this coming Mon., Nov. 10, 5:30pm at MODC 114. For more information contact Michael Coyle.
