News Release: CSU, Chico Nationally Ranked for Study Abroad Program

CSU, Chico Nationally Ranked for Study Abroad Program
California State University, Chico is among the U.S. leaders in the quality of its study abroad program, according to a new national ranking of student participation.
According to the Institute of International Education, the leading nonprofit educational/cultural exchange organization in the United States, CSU, Chico ranks second among master’s-level institutions for the number of students studying abroad for one year or longer.
CSU, Chico had 191 students studying abroad for a full academic year in 2006-07, the most recent year that national data was available. Only two other master’s-level institutions sent more than 100 students abroad for a year: Touro College in New York City, ranked ahead of Chico with 300, and San Francisco State, ranked behind Chico with 188.

Ramp Closure East Entrance Kendall Hall Nov. 20 - Dec. 12
Beginning Thurs., Nov. 20 and running through Dec.12, the east entrance of Kendall Hall will be closed for reconstruction of the ramp and steps. FMS crews will be performing this work. In addition to the ramp, portions of the walkways leading up to the ramp will be replaced to eliminate tripping hazards and code deficiencies. For your safety, please use alternate building entrances during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your cooperation.

The On-Campus Residence Halls Will Close Nov. 21
University Housing and Food Service would like to remind the University community that it will not be a hardship for students living in the on-campus residence halls (Lassen, Shasta, Whitney, Esken, Mechoopda and Konkow) to be expected to attend class on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008. Although the halls officially close at 6pm for Thanksgiving break, students with late classes have the opportunity to request authorization to remain in the hall beyond the designated closing time. The deadline to make this request with their Residence Community Coordinator was Friday, Nov. 14, 2008. Students were given notice of this process in letter form. If you have any questions, please contact University Housing and Food Service at x6325.

Willie Nelson Just Added to Chico Performances Spring Line-up

From Farm Aid to country crossover super-stardom, Willie is equal parts American icon, singer-songwriter, poet, political, activist and actor. And, he has penned some of country music’s best loved classics including On the Road Again, Crazy and All the Girls I’ve Loved Before. This promises to be a Laxson classic. Opening for Willie will be his son, Lukas Nelson and The Promise of the Real.

Information Session for "Anastasia's Russia," Dec. 3
HFA is offering a tour to “Anastasia’s Russia” June 8-21, 2009. Dr. Jed Wyrick will be the faculty-in-residence and will host an information session on Dec. 3, 4:30pm - 5:30pm in Trinity 100. Everyone is welcome, including friends and family. Students can register for 1-3 units in either religious studies or humanities.
Dr. Wyrick, chair of the Department of Religious Studies and coordinator of its programs in Humanities and Modern Jewish and Israel Studies, earned his PhD from Harvard in comparative literature and his BA from Brandeis in classics. He first visited the (then) Soviet Union in 1987.
“We will travel to the vast metropolis of Moscow built on the site of a medieval wooden fortress; the neoclassical architecture of St. Petersburg, city of canals; and the ancient towns of the Golden Ring, pivotal in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church,” said Wyrick.
The $5,889 package includes round-trip airfare from San Francisco; hotels with private baths; and buffet breakfasts and three dinners. A deposit of $450 holds your place. Deadline to sign up: Feb. 8, 2009.

Experience Traditional Mexican Heritage with Ballet Folklorico, Dec. 6
Chico Performances presents Ballet Folkorico IMBA: Posada Navidena, a vibrant showcase celebrating Christmas with Mexican heritage, song, dance and music, in Laxson Auditorium on Dec. 6, 2008 at 7:30pm.
In a beautiful holiday salute to the song and dance heritage of Mexico, Instituto Mazatlan Bellas Artes de Sacramento’s Ballet Folklorico group will be performing Posada Navidena. With all the colorful stylings that go with Ballet Folklorico performances, this evening will feature a live mariachi band and stunning dancers, all in authentic dress. This performance will capture the complexity and intensity of traditional music and dance celebrating Mexico’s holiday season.

Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul coming to Laxson Auditorium, Nov. 21
Join Chico Performances as they present Eileen Ivers and Immigrant soul for a night of fast-paced Celtic music on Nov. 21, at 7:30pm.
Anytime a Celtic band includes a “beatbox” and “drum loop,” it’s safe to say their performance will rock. Eileen Ivers, nine-time winner of the All-Irish Fiddling Championship, and her band Immigrant Soul combine Celtic with everything from Latin to blues in an infectious blend of world music. African and Latin percussion combined with fiddle, funky bass, acoustic piano, synthesizers, drums and blues harmonica have earned her a huge international following. The resulting sound has been described as “world fusion, with a Celtic edge.”

International Forum, Dec. 2
Amro Jayousi, a Palestinian student at CSU, Chico from Ramallah, Palestine, will speak to the International Forum on Dec. 2 from 5pm - 550pm about Western involvement in the Middle East. The title is “From Ramallah to Chico: A Palestinian Student’s Perspective on Today’s Middle East.”
Amro will discuss Middle Eastern views about Iran, Iraq, and the Israeli-Palestinian issue. There will be time given for questions and answers.

AS Presents: Matisyahu to perform TONIGHT
American Hasidic Jew, Matisyahu will perform today at 8pm in the BMU Auditorium. Blending traditional Jewish themes with Reggae, Rock and Hip-Hop sounds, he has garnered a huge following after releasing “Live at Stubbs and Youth” his highly acclaimed CD release. First GE Design Forum, Dec. 12
A General Education Design Team has been charged by the Provost to “engage in a deep, deliberative examination of the current General Education program and the policies that guide it, and through consultation revise General Education to improve student learning of the essential knowledge, skills and attributes for an educated participant in civic and intellectual life in the 21st century.”
The team invites all interested faculty, staff, students, and alumni to the first Forum on GE Design on Dec. 12, 2008 in Kendall 207/209 from 2pm - 4pm. The objective of this first Forum is to orient the campus to the general goals of GE and seek input on specific ideas for GE structure, intellectual focus, and design. This will be one of many opportunities to bring your creative ideas about this important part of our curriculum to the forefront. This cumulative effort is essential for creating a GE program for the 21st century.

9th Annual Tri-County Economic Forecast Conference
The Center for Economic Development, CSU, Chico is now accepting registrations for the 9th Annual Tri-County Economic Forecast Conference being held on Thurs., Jan. 15, 2009 at the Bell Memorial Union on the campus of CSU, Chico.
This annual conference provides attendees with useful insight and knowledge about economic trends in Butte, Glenn and Tehama counties, which will improve the ability of local businesses and community leaders to successfully plan for the future of Northern California. This year’s focus will have a significant emphasis on “Emerging Opportunities for Economic Growth” by exploring industries relevant to the North State while also staying competitive in the current market.
Mr. Randall Kempner from Washington, D.C. who is the Vice President for Regional Innovation for the Council on Competitiveness will highlight the conference as the keynote speaker.
