College of Business’ SIFE Program Receives Grant from Target

California State University, Chico has received a $5,000 grant from Target in recognition of its efforts in volunteerism through SIFE - Students in Free Enterprise. This grant will be used for SIFE’s Wise Kid/Healthy Kid program, in which SIFE helps 4th, 5th and 6th graders learn entrepreneurial skills.

Each semester SIFE invites the elementary school children to campus for four Saturdays to teach them the basics of business. This fall there are approximately 70 youngsters in the program.

During the program the students are shown how to develop a product, create a business and marketing plan, then create their product and sell it at the Chico Farmers Market. Each student is given $10 from SIFE for their start-up capital. On a Saturday following the program, the students sell their products.

The complete news release is available online.

Other building fans will be operating throughout to maintain the building’s air quality standards. However, some areas may experience slightly cooler or warmer temperatures than usual. Auschwitz Survivor Will Speak After Break, Dec. 1

Monday, December 1
7:30pm, PAC 144

Living with her family in Hungary. Renee Firestone was deported with hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz in 1944. Her mother was gassed immediately upon arrival at the extermination camp. Her 14-year-old sister was subjected to medical experiments and died. Her father died soon after Allied troops liberated the camp. Renee was one of the lucky few who survived. Since then, she has devoted her life to those who perished by fighting hate in their memory. She is a tireless leader in many areas of social justice and Holocaust remembrance and education. For the last thirty years, Firestone has worked with the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Educational Outreach Program in Los Angeles, a program that she helped create. She has told her story often to many different education, religious and community groups around the country. She was featured in Spielberg’s Academy Award winning documentary, “The Last Days.” She is also in two additional Academy Award nominated films, the “Freedom Writers’ Diary” and “Swimming in Auschwitz.” Her visit is sponsored by the Departments of Sociology and Religious Studies and the Nelson Avenue Middle School in Thermalito. This event is free and open to the public.

Humanities Center Gallery in December: David Johnson@Eighty: A Retrospective (1947-2008)

December 2-19
Humanities Center Gallery, 898-4642
Trinity 100 and Hallway, hours: M-F 8am - 5pm
Thurs., Dec. 4, Reception, 5pm - 7pm
Artist’s talk at 6pm, introduced by colleague and friend Ira H. Latour

The Humanities Center Gallery joins the University Art Gallery (UAG), The Turner, 1078 Gallery, and Avenue 9 Gallery in this fall’s tribute to the photography of Ansel Adams and the photographers and artists Adams influenced. David Johnson is one such photographer, and we are fortunate to be showing his works — because of the good efforts of his friends Ira H. Latour (whose Portraiture and Place just closed at the 1078) and Tom Patton, director of the photography program at CSU, Chico and co-curator with Jason Tannen of the UAG’s recent Nature & Spirit: The Landscape Photographs of Ansel Adams.

A photographer with over half a century of experience, David Johnson has the distinction of being Ansel Adam’s first African American student at the California School of Fine Arts, now known as the San Francisco Art Institute. After graduating from CSFA, Johnson went on to establish his own studio on Fillmore Street diligently documenting the development of the neighborhood during the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s.

University Film Series: 'The History Boys,' Dec. 2

University Film Series
Tuesdays at 7:30pm
Ayres 106
898-4642
$3 donation appreciated

Dec.2
The History Boys (2006, U.K.) 109 min. Written and directed by Alan Bennett. Hosted by Laura Nice, Humanities Program, for the History Club (PHATHH) and in conjunction with the Humanities Center’s year-long theme “Regarding Beauty.”

In 1980s Britain, a group of young men at Cutlers’ Grammar School all have the brains, and the will to earn the chance of getting accepted in the finest universities in the nation, Oxford and Cambridge. Despite the fine teaching by excellent professionals like Mrs. Lintott in history and the intellectually enthusiastic Hector in General Studies, the Headmaster is not satisfied. He signs on the young Irwin to polish the students’ style to give them the best chance. In this mix of intellectualism and creative spirit that guides a rigorous preparation regime for that ultimate educational brass ring, the lives of the randy students and the ostensibly restrained faculty intertwine that would change their lives forever.
