CSU, Chico to Celebrate ‘Darwin Day’ Feb. 12
Feb. 12 will be Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday. To commemorate this occasion, faculty and staff from across California State University, Chico have organized a series of events, including a birthday celebration, a book club, nature hikes, lectures and discussions and a film showing. All events are free and open to the public.
On Thursday, Feb. 12, there will be a family-friendly celebration of Darwin’s birthday. The event will be complete with games, educational displays, prizes, an interactive human evolution exhibit and birthday cake. This celebration will be 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Sylvester’s Creekside Cafe on the CSU, Chico campus. Students, faculty and staff from the Departments of Geological and Environmental Sciences and Biological Sciences as well as from the Museum of Anthropology will be among the participants.
The Northern California Natural History Museum is sponsoring a book club focused on “The Origin of Species,” which will meet at Chico Barnes and Noble 7-8 p.m. on three Wednesdays, Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Feb. 11. CSU, Chico faculty members from the biology, multicultural and gender studies, and philosophy departments will facilitate discussions.

Inauguration Viewing

Due to the historic nature of this year’s Inauguration and a great deal of interest on campus, the ceremony will be shown in PAC 134 Tues., Jan. 20, starting at 8:30am. Managers and supervisors should allow attendance within the limits of safety and good sense. Televisions in the BMU will also be showing the Inauguration.

Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) for Fall 2009
The University has implemented a deposit requirement for new undergraduate and second baccalaureate students admitted for Fall 09. Students will be required to submit a $200 non-refundable Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) along with their intent-to-enroll decision by May 1.
Financially needy students may be exempted based on any of the following criteria: receipt of an admission application fee waiver; FAFSA estimated family contribution (EFC) of $5,200 or less; admission to the EOP program. If students do not submit their decision and deposit/exemption, their admission may be rescinded after May 1. International and Graduate students will not be required to submit a deposit at this time.

Replacement Fee for Parking Permits
Effective immediately, a $20 replacement fee will be charged to replace parking permits due to theft, loss or those replacements requested by the permit holder for other reasons. This fee does not apply to situations where the University requests staff and faculty to obtain replacement permits for enforcement or normal wear-and-tear situations.
Replacement permits can be obtained at Student Financial Services, SSC 230. For stolen permits, please also contact University Police to complete a theft report.

REVISED: CSU, Chico Employees in Need of Donated Leave Credits
The following employees are in need of donated leave credits:

Any CSU, Chico employee who accrues sick leave or vacation leave credits may donate leave credits to other eligible employees on the CSU, Chico campus, regardless of bargaining unit affiliation. Associated Student employees and CSU, Chico University Research Foundation employees are not eligible to donate leave credits to CSU, Chico employees.
If you wish to donate leave credits, you will need to sign the catastrophic leave donation list - which is maintained at the Payroll/Benefits Customer Service Counter (Kendall 222). BECAUSE YOUR SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED, YOUR DONATIONS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED OVER THE PHONE OR VIA E-MAIL.
Per Catastrophic Leave Program guidelines, only the Disability Programs Office or a union representative may solicit for Catastrophic Leave donations; solicitation by any other party is prohibited.

CORRECTION: Tax Exempt Reminder
State Employees wanting to renew their complete exemption from tax withholding for 2009 must file a NEW Employee Action Request (EAR) or Student Payroll Action Request (SPAR) at the Payroll Office by close of business Feb. 8, 2009. Forms are available at the Payroll Customer Service Counter in Kendall 222 between 7:30am - 5pm.
Employees who previously had a complete exemption from tax withholding and do not file a new exemption will have taxes withheld from their pay based on single marital status and zero exemptions effective with the February 2009 pay period. All other employees tax status and allowances will continue without change.

Absence Management: FLSA, Exempt, Non-Exempt on 1/16/09
Collective bargaining agreements for represented employees, California State University policy for non-represented employees and the Fair Labor Standards Act define how absences and overtime are reported for exempt and non-exempt employees. This training will provide a basic overview of the differences with exempt and non-exempt work schedules, absence, and overtime reporting, as well as basic leave accounting practices and expectations. All employees, supervisors, and managers are encouraged to attend. This workshop is part of the Supervisory Certification Program. There are only a few seats left, so please register quickly.
