Students Win Top Award Fifth Year in a Row at Prestigious Manufacturing Engineers Event

The California State University, Chico team from the student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has won the Grand Prize for the fifth year in a row in the WESTEC (Western Tool Exposition and Conference) Manufacturing Challenge that was held March 30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The winning project was the shortrun production of a solid hardwood machinist’s tool chest based on a 100-year-old classic design. “What made this project stand out at the WESTEC competition,” said Leonard Fallscheer, faculty advisor to the SME team, “was the attention to detail by the students for defining and documenting the complete manufacturing process. This included not only the design and fabrication of the tool chests, but the tooling and vacuum fixtures for CNC [Computer Numerical Control—an automated method of controlling a tool] machining, as well as the project management plan for the entire production.”

The WESTEC Manufacturing Challenge is an annual event sponsored by SME to showcase manufacturing programs at colleges and universities in the western states. CSU, Chico competed against a field of 11 other universities and colleges that included: Brigham Young University; University of Colorado at Denver; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; California State Universities at Long Beach, Los Angeles and Northridge; North Dakota State; and four community colleges. This is CSU, Chico’s sixth Grand Prize win in the last seven years.

Salary Information in the ER

To: Faculty and Staff
From: Joe Wills, Director of Public Affairs and Publications

Recently, the Chico Enterprise Record made a Public Records Act request for CSU, Chico employee compensation. The newspaper also requested this information last year, and made it available on a Web site along with other public employee salary information — http://www.chicoer.com/salaries. The new request covers compensation in fiscal year 2007-08.

As you may know, salary and classification data pertaining to state, county and municipal employees is public information, and so is subject to Public Records Act requests. It’s important to point out that compensation listed in the newspaper for an individual employee may not match his or her W-2. To comply with the ER request, annual salary data was drawn from the most recent month available; some salary adjustments may not be reflected in this data.

I appreciate how sensitive a subject compensation is, and thank you for your patience and understanding as we comply with this request for public information.

“Finding a Life and Good Food Beyond Factory Farms”
Nicolette Hahn Niman
Environmental activist, attorney, and cattle rancher (Niman Ranch)
Wed., April 8, 7:30pm
PAC 134

Nicolette Hahn Niman takes time to visit Chico on her national book tour to discuss the practices of hog factory farms and the devastating contributions these practices make to air and water pollution. By contrast, Niman advocates supporting the innovative and cost-effective methods of traditional ranching whose practitioners make profits through ethical and sustainable means.

-Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

“[A] searing, and utterly convincing, indictment of modern meat production.”
-Michael Pollan, author, Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food

“The best piece of writing on animal agriculture I have encountered in 25 years of work in animal welfare and agriculture.”

Reception for Jennifer Linnea Daly, April 9

The temporal nature of things
Jennifer Linnea Daly
Master of Fine Arts Exhibition
April 5 - 11, 2009

Thursday, April 9
Reception, 5pm - 7pm

The University Art Gallery presents an exhibition of anthotypes by MFA candidate Jennifer Linnea Daly. Originally invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842, an anthotype is an image created using photosensitive material from plants. The process uses an emulsion made from crushed flower petals or any other light-sensitive plant, fruit or vegetable.

The University Art Gallery is located in Taylor Hall, California State University Chico, at First and Salem Streets. Gallery hours: Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm, Saturday - Sunday from noon - 4pm.

This exhibition is funded by Student Instructionally Related Activities Fees.

About her work, Ms. Daly says:

Anthotypes allow for an exploration of the temporal nature of the landscape and the effects of time and light on the natural world. The images, simple, formal compositions on a light or dark background, are a deconstruction of the larger landscape allowing for contemplation of the individual parts. As anthotypes, the images have a finite lifetime and like the actual plants themselves, continue to change during their existence eventually fading into oblivion.
