Sixth Annual Alumni Spring Tri-Tip Barbeque in May

Join the Chico Chapter of the Chico State Alumni Association at their sixth annual Spring Tri-Tip Barbeque. The barbeque will take place on Thursday, May 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Yolo Lawn, located behind Shurmer Gym on the CSU, Chico campus.

Tickets are $8 per person or $15 for two. Sponsorship opportunities are available for a minimum of $100 each. Participants will have the opportunity to meet fellow Chico-area alumni and friends. Guests can purchase hourly parking permits from the 2nd/Normal Lot, Stadium Lot, or the Parking Structure. Permits are $1 per hour (up to four hours) or $5 for the entire day. These permits allow parking in any “G” stall on campus

University Hosts All Majors Career and Internship Fair

The CSU, Chico Career Center will host its spring All Majors Career and Internship Fair on Thursday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in CSU, Chico’s BMU Auditorium.

Attendees such as HP, Hyatt, Peace Corps, US Forest Service and Lilly USA (pharmaceuticals) will have contact with a variety of students from across campus seeking internships and full-time positions.

“Career fairs at Chico State continue to be strong, even in light of the extremely challenging economic times,” said Career Center Director Jamie Starmer. “Students continue to make significant professional contacts at our career fairs, which directly lead to professional jobs and internships.”

Summer Registration Is Open

Students can now register for summer term. The summer schedule has been available for some time, and can be searched by session dates. Many new summer courses are now delivered online to allow students greater flexibility. The fee structure in effect this year reflects part-time (0 - 6 units) and full-time (6+ units). This is a departure from previous summers where a per-unit fee was charged to students enrolled in fewer than 6 units. The summer fee schedule is available on-line through Student Financial Services. The summer fee payment deadline is May 21, 2009. Some financial aid is available for students who qualify and have registered for summer courses.

Transportation Demand Management Plan

This is the final week to submit your comments on the University’s Draft Transportation Demand Management Plan (Draft TDM). If you were unable to make last week’s presentation you can review the information at the Web site.

Please take a moment to review this important information about a multitude of transportation subjects and how they relate to the campus; let us know what is important to you.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was able to attend the Draft TDM meeting and your valued input.

Campus Blood Drive, April 8

Stop by the Campus Blood Drive scheduled Wed., April 8, from 10am - 4pm in the Bell Memorial Auditorium. The CSU, Chico Women’s Rugby Club will assist you with check-in. In order to donate, please bring a photo ID or donor card, and remember to eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating. Participants must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be generally healthy. Please allow one hour for the donation process.

Appointments can be made by calling the Staff Council office, 898-6156. Walk-ins are welcome. Questions should be directed to the Staff Council office. All participants will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskins-Robbins Ice Cream.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is Hiring Paraprofessional Advisors

The success of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is largely due to the students that work in our office. EOP values its student employees and provides opportunities for professional growth We are currently hiring paraprofessional Advisors for the 2009-2010 academic year and applications are due Tues., April 14.

The paraprofessional advisor works directly with students participating in the EOP First Year Experience to help them transition to college life. These duties include academic advising, co-leading university life workshops, and organizing cultural activities for the students. The paraprofessional advisor has the opportunity to be a great role model to new students.

Yard Sale to Benefit Non-Profit Organizations, April 17-18

University Housing and Food Service, in partnership with Greek Life, are sponsoring a Yard Sale Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18 at Selvester’s Cafe from 8am - 5pm. All proceeds received from the sales will go to two non-profit organizations - Up ‘til Dawn and Pennies for Peace. Items that are not sold will be donated to local charities. Museum WithOut Walls (MWOW) Continues Tomorrow

The Gateway Science Museum (formerly the Northern California Natural History Museum) continues its lecture series, Museum WithOut Walls (MWOW) tomorrow evening. Please join us to hear Dr. Karin Hoover, Associate Professor, Geological and Environmental Sciences, discuss the Problems and Progress of Chico’s Groundwater.

The MWOW series is held each Wednesday in April, beginning at 7:30pm, at the CARD Center on Vallombrosa Avenue. Suggested donation of $3 per adult; students are free with ID. More information available: www.gatewayscience.org.

Career Center - All Majors Career Fair, April 16

The CSU, Chico Career Center will host its spring All Majors Career Fair, featuring careers and internships, on Thursday, April 16, 2009 from 10am to 2pm in the BMU Auditorium.

“Career Fairs at Chico State continue to be strong, even in light of the extremely challenging economic times,” said Career Center Director Jamie Starmer. “Students continue to make significant professional contacts at our career fairs, which directly lead to professional jobs and internships.”

Katherine has been working as an international student advisor at CSU, Chico since 2006. Prior to that, she worked in India for four years running international exchange programs for the Girl Scouts, and in Japan for three years teaching English. She holds a Master’s degree in International Education. Katherine will share with you her experiences and advice on how to get into the field of international exchange management.

Relay for Life Team: Cancer Society Fundraiser at Tea Bar, TONIGHT

The University Relay For Life team is holding a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society tonight, 5pm - 8pm at Tea Bar and Fusion Café, 250 Vallombrosa. Live music will be provided by Chris Kelly. For every purchase the café will donate 20 percent to cancer research, services, and education.

The café offers hot, iced, steamed, and sparkling teas, and rice and salad bowls and wraps.

The relay team of 21 staff members have already raised $14,000 toward their goal of more than $20,000. Team members are also taking donations, selling raffle tickets, and luminaria candle sponsorships in honor or memory of a loved one. The Relay for Life is April 25 and 26 at Pleasant Valley High School.

Nobel Peace Prize Winning Economist to Speak on Climate Change

Jason Shogren is the Strook Professor of Natural Resource Conservation and Management and Professor of Economics at the University of Wyoming. His research examines the behavioral underpinnings of public policy, especially for environmental and natural resources. He will be speaking on the “Political Economy of Climate Change.”

Professor Shogren served as the White House senior economist for environmental and natural resource policy, Council of Economic Advisors in 1997. He is also among the elite group of scientists sharing the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore.

TLP wants to let you know about events happening this week with regards to “Clickers.” We have a few special trainings and a TILT Presentation. “Clickers - Engage Your Classroom”
Learn what is necessary to add TurningPoint student response systems to your classes. We’ll cover how to access the software and give an introduction to polling, participant lists, and reporting. We’ll discuss best practices and things to consider when implementing clickers. Presenter, Elissa Shaner from Turning Technologies.
