Special Anniversaries and Achievements Highlight 2009 Founders Week

California State University, Chico’s rich past, outstanding accomplishments and distinctive programs will be highlighted during the 16th annual Founders Week celebration taking place April 18-26, 2009. Founders Week is the special occasion each spring for the campus and community to celebrate CSU, Chico’s heritage and achievements.

Commemorating the University’s long and successful history will be events such as the Department of Computer Science’s 40th anniversary gathering on Saturday, April 18. Alumni from across the state and beyond are planning to attend the event and reflect on the department’s trailblazing role in computer science education. On Tuesday, April 21, the Chico State Alumni Association will host faculty and staff who are alumni for fun and refreshments at Sapp Hall, which is celebrating its 125th birthday.

Later in the week, the University will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Charter Day, the 1909 memorial event that is the precursor to Founders Week. On Friday, April 24, John and Annie Bidwell’s gifts that established the original Normal School—and the spirit of giving that continues as a hallmark of the University—will be honored in a ceremony in front of Kendall Hall.

You Still Have a Chance to Complete a Survey on Concealed Firearms on Campus

Professors Ryan Patten and Matt Thomas of the Political Science Department are conducting a survey of staff and faculty, regarding opinions on concealed firearms on campus. In light of the recent shootings on college campuses across the country, there has been a grassroots movement for students to have the right to carry concealed handguns on campus. This research, conducted at both CSU, Chico, and another college campus, seeks to better understand attitudes about concealed firearms. Approximately 1,100 CSU, Chico students completed surveys in the fall.

The survey is available online . This survey will take only about three minutes to complete. This research project has been cleared by the Human Subjects in Research Committee.

Thank you for your assistance.

Please contact Principal Investigator Ryan Patten at 898.5335 or rpatten@csuchico.edu with questions.

Nicolette Hahn Niman
Environmental activist, attorney, and cattle rancher (Niman Ranch)
Tonight at 7:30pm
PAC 134

Nicolette Hahn Niman takes time to visit Chico on her national book tour to discuss the practices of hog factory farms and the devastating contributions these practices make to air and water pollution. -Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

“[A] searing, and utterly convincing, indictment of modern meat production.”
-Michael Pollan, author, Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food

“The best piece of writing on animal agriculture I have encountered in 25 years of work in animal welfare and agriculture.”
