Conversations on Diversity, "White Privilege and the Politics of Identity," April 15
Facilitators: Jill Swiencicki and Chris Fosen, Professors of English
Whiteness is a racial category that has great meaning in terms of granting social power, privilege, and legitimacy to those who are recognized as part of that category. In this presentation, Fosen and Swiencicki will talk about the history of the category “white” in the U.S., about the assumptions behind the term, and the way it structures social and political beliefs, values, and practices. They will ground these analyses in specific examples from the 2008 Presidential election, arguing that whiteness, even in 2009, still functions to legitimate racist ideas, promote “unqualified birdbrains,” and prevent new structures for social equality from emerging.
BMU 210 from 12pm - 1pm and snacks will be provided.
For more information, please contact the Office of Diversity at 530-898-4764.

CSUEU April Lunch Meeting: Job Merging. April 15
Mark your calendars, and plan to join us on April 15 for a work shop by Jerry Saner, union steward from CSU, Humboldt and a member of the CSUEU Classification Committee. The title of this workshop is Job Merging. This will focus on several aspects of working in the CSU. We have often seen that our jobs “creep” over time until we are doing the job of 1-1/2 staff and often of a higher classification. This is particularly evident now as departments reorganize when staff leave and are not replaced.
The CSUEU Classification Committee wants to raise employee awareness as to their rights and how to recognize and approach this issue, especially important in these difficult budget times.
This work shop is in Kendall 207/209 and will start at 11:30am and repeat until 2pm to catch as many staff as possible over their lunches. Feel free to drop in and join the discussion. Bring your particular issues and questions and we will try to address them.
Refreshments will be served.
