The Bernard Osher Foundation Supports CSU, Chico Reentry Student Scholarships

The Bernard Osher Foundation recently approved a CSU, Chico Continuing Education grant proposal to provide scholarships for reentry students. The goal of the program is to support students who want to return to the University to finish an undergraduate degree program.

This award provides $50,000 for reentry scholarships for students whose studies were interrupted for at least five years by circumstances beyond their control and who now want to resume their studies at CSU, Chico.

This is the third consecutive year that the Osher Foundation has supported this scholarship program at CSU, Chico. To date, $100,000 has been distributed through the Osher scholarship program directly supporting 29 Chico State students.

The complete news release is available online.

Ellen Deering Endowment Fund, Call for Proposals for 2009/2010

In the late 1970’s, Ellen Deering established an endowment as a memorial to the C.E. Deering family. Her intent was to support research projects about the history of Northeastern California and the history of CSU, Chico, particularly the development and organization of the University Archives. Mrs. Deering required that copies of all projects funded from the Endowment be deposited in Meriam Library Special Collections.

Proposals for the 2009/10 competition should be sent to Carolyn Dusenbury/Deering Endowment Project Director/Meriam Library/CSU, Chico/Chico, CA 95929-0295. Applications must be received by or postmarked on May 1, 2009.

Proposals are reviewed by the Ellen Deering Committee. Successful applicants will be notified by June 15, 2009.

For Deering Endowment Fund information and guidelines, please contact Carolyn Dusenbury.

April 25 "Ramparts" Band Concert to Feature Civil War-era "Coded Song"

CSU, Chico’s School of the Arts presents Ramparts, the annual spring band concert featuring the CSU, Chico Wind Ensemble, Sat.,, April 25 at 7:30pm in Harlen Adams Theatre.

The Wind Ensemble, directed by Royce S. Tevis, Department of Music faculty member, will be joined during the concert by several other student ensembles — the Beans and Rice Experiement, a jazz combo; and the Windsperation Duo, a flute and harp group.

Works performed during Ramparts will include “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” by Steven Rouse and “Fandango” by Joseph Turin. “Fandango” will feature Ayako Nakamura on the trumpet and Laura Antonius on the trombone.

“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” which is considered a “coded song,” is one of a handful of Civil War-era spirituals that refer directly to the “underground railroad” - an escape route for slaves in the south. A personal favorite spiritual of underground railroad “conductor” Harriet Tubman, many of the code words in this piece refer to escape from slavery.

Tickets: University Box Office, 898-6333.

S. Elise Archias, Art History
“Everydayness”
Humanities Center Friday Symposium
Trinity 126 and 100*

In the 1960s, New York artists inserted the quality of everydayness into the works and spaces of art where beauty and grandeur had once confidently reigned. This presentation will provide a chance to look at examples of the performance art made during this period and to discuss both what was lost and gained — what, that is, we contemporary art makers and viewers do and do not want to inherit from this negative, creative episode of history.

  • Part of the Humanities Center’s year-long theme, “Regarding Beauty.”
